The length of order is unknown at this time, we will advise when it is lifted.

The sheriff's office said it received a 9-1-1 call at about 9:30 a.m. from the hunter who said he had been stabbed by an unknown person.

Deputies and the Drexel Fire Department responded to a wooded area about a mile North of town near East 341st Street and State Line Road where they found a 41-year-old victim in a field who appeared to have been stabbed, police said.

The victim was flown to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment. He is expected to recover, according to police.

November deer harvest tops last year’s figure

Missouri’s robust deer herd continues to pump millions into the state’s economy annually and supports 11,000 Show-Me State jobs.

JEFFERSON CITY–Hunters checked 190,089 deer during Missouri’s 11-day November firearms deer hunt, slightly surpassing last year’s figure despite a slow start on opening weekend.

Extremely windy weather, combined with reduced deer populations in some areas, dropped the opening-weekend harvest 10,000 below the 2010 figure. Hunters persevered, however, and more than made up lost ground in the following nine days of the November hunt. In the end, they harvested 1,884 more than last year, a 1-percent increase.

Top harvest counties were Howell with 3,483 deer checked, Macon with 3,393 and Texas with 3,284. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recorded sixfirearms-related deer-hunting accidents during the November hunt, down from nine last year.

MDC Resource Scientist Jason Sumners said changes to hunting regulations over the past 20 years are responsible for producing more large-antlered deer.

Sumners noted that in 2003, antlered deer made up 37 percent of the November firearms deer harvest. Last year, 40 percent of the harvest consisted of antlered deer. This year, the figure was 43 percent. This narrowing of the gap between doe and buck harvest began with implementation of the four-point rule for antlered deer in 2004.

Missouri’s four-point rule, now in effect in all or parts of 69 counties, allows hunters to shoot an antlered buck only if it has at least four points measuring 1 inch or longer on at least one side. The antler-point restriction allows more bucks to grow trophy antlers while providing effective control of deer numbers.
Sumners said that before implementation of antler-point restrictions, 1.5-year-old bucks made up 40 to 50 percent of the total buck harvest. Today in counties with the antler-point restriction, 1.5-year-old bucks make up 10 to 15 percent of the total buck harvest. After more than four years under antler-point restrictions, 30 to 40 percent of the bucks harvested are 3.5 years and older. That means hunters are seeing and harvesting more larger-antlered adult bucks.

“It’s no wonder the four-point rule has become very popular with hunters,” he said.
MDC has been working for the better part of a decade to balance hunting opportunities against crop damage, deer-vehicle accidents and other problems associated with overabundant deer. The agency’s current challenge is to maintain a healthy, stable deer herd while working with landowners and hunters to fine-tune harvest at the local level.

MDC Director Bob Ziehmer hailed this year’s deer harvest numbers as good news for all Missourians.
“A robust firearms deer harvest is proof of a healthy deer herd that benefits all Missourians, whether they hunt or not,” said Ziehmer. “Resident deer hunters and a significant number of hunters from out of state spend approximately $700 million on their sport. That spending generates more than $1 billion in business activity. In all, deer hunting supports 11,000 Missouri jobs. In these economic times, that’s a big boost to the state’s economy.”

David Cook missing since November 19th 2008

It has been 3 years since David Cook of Amsterdam went missing from his residence in Amsterdam. The 55 year old man disappeared from his ranch in mid-November of 2008.
David Cook

Cook, was a 34 year employee of the nearby KCPL generating plant at LaCygne, Kansas . On the day of his disappearance, it was a day as normal, Cook had scheduled a contractor’s meeting at the ranch to go over plans for an upcoming project, but the otherwise reliable cook, didn’t show up.

A 200-person search party, included several on horseback, hikers, boats , and the Highway Patrol helicopter assisted in the search , all to no avail.

After three years, the family of David Cook is asking for any information or leads you may have to be reported to the Bates County sheriff’s Office or the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Cook has been missing since November 19th, 2008.

Venison is a Healthy Choice but should be handled with Care

During this hunting season venison is gracing the table in many households. From a nutritional perspective, it is a good choice. It is a great source of protein that has significantly less fat than beef and pork. As with all protein-based foods, it is especially important to handle venison with care to prevent foodborne illness in the people who consume it.

Three ounces of deer meat contains 134 calories and has only three grams of fat. The same amount of beef can contain 259 calories and 18 grams of fat; pork, 214 calories and 13 grams of fat.

Eating fresh venison is not recommended because parasites and tapeworms are common. Freeze venison for 24-48 hours (48 is better) before eating or using it to make sausage or jerky. This will kill parasites and tapeworms. Cooking to 160 degrees will also kill these parasites.

Jerky and sausage made from venison is a favorite in many households. It also must be handled with care to prevent bacterial growth. E.coli is present in the intestinal tract of deer and can survive in homemade jerky and fermented sausages like pepperoni. Jerky made from venison should be steamed, roasted or boiled to 160 degrees before drying.

When cooking, sausage, deer bologna, ground venison, chops, steaks and roasts should reach 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Soups, stews, casseroles and meatloaf should be cooked to 165 degrees. When reheating leftovers, assure they reach 165 degrees. (University of Minnesota Extension Service: Wild Game Cookery: Venison)

Venison can tend to be dry and less tender but there are ways to add moisture and flavor. To decrease the gamey flavor, soak the meat in a solution of two tablespoons of vinegar per quart of water for an hour before cooking. To keep meat from getting too dry, rub the roast with some oil before cooking.

Marinades are a great way to add flavor and also tenderize the meat. Some things venison can be marinated in include French dressing, Italian dressing, tomato sauce, and fruit juice among others. Always marinade meat in the refrigerator and discard the marinade when you cook the meat. You can get too much of a good thing though. Marinating for more than 24 hours can break down the meat fibers and make it mushy.

So, enjoy your hunt but assure your deer is handled safely from field to table.

Missouri Veterans Homes
The recent Veterans Day ceremonies gave me an opportunity to reflect on the importance of commemorating the events and the people who have protected us. Celebrating those brave men and women who have answered our nation’s call to protect our freedoms is an act I don’t carry out lightly. As a lawmaker and a member of the Missouri Veterans Commission, issues dealing with Missouri’s military and veterans continue to be among my highest priorities.
Veterans' issues have been a focus of mine since I began my career in the Capitol. In 2009, I ushered House Bill 82 through the Senate, a bill that created a 100 percent tax exemption for any military retirement income. In 2010, the Missouri Legislature passed House Bill 1893, increasing funding for the Veterans Commission Capital Improvement Trust Fund (VCCITF) by directing a percentage of monies brought in by gaming to the VCCITF. These funds are set aside to use for capital costs, veterans homes and cemeteries, including maintenance and upkeep, as well as veterans’ service officers programs. Most recently, during the 2011 regular legislative session, I handled House Bill 136, which assists military families by providing unemployment benefits to military spouses when they are required to move with their member of the military in order to support their families.

I have the privilege of serving on the Missouri Veterans Commission. Under my watch, we will continue to see the Missouri Veterans Home program, among other veterans’ programs, remain fully staffed and funded to meet veterans’ needs. After all, one of the homes in this program is certainly near to my heart in the 31st Senatorial District, and the families and employees that this program affects are important to me. The numerous volunteers and employees who maintain the Warrensburg Veterans Home have my highest respect for their wonderful work.

In the last three challenging budget years, the legislature has maintained the budget for our Missouri veterans homes with absolutely no major reductions to the programs’ funding. We have funded these programs to the same amount as both the governor and the department’s recommendations. We have, however, had to find ways to achieve this goal. Like many of Missouri’s citizens have had to make do when one line item outweighs another during this difficult economy, my colleagues and I have had to shift monies from other funds or find alternative funds in order to maintain full funding for whatever budget level is called for. It is true that funding has not always come completely out of the state's General Revenue funds, but that fact doesn't make the program any less fully funded.

At this point, the budget for Fiscal Year 2013 has not even been brought to the table by the governor, and that action is the first step to creating a fully funded, balanced budget. There is no indication at this time, despite tough decisions that might need to be made, that any veterans' programs, including the Missouri Veterans Homes system, would suffer budget restrictions or losses. There is time to work on any budgetary issues or concerns involving veterans' issues, including the Missouri Veterans Home system. There are currently several options under examination as we go forward in our efforts to provide a dedicated source of funding for our veterans, which may or may not include a sales tax increase, or other fee enhancements.

As Missourians, it is our duty to offer our support to those who have offered us their protection. I will continue to do so from my perspective as a lawmaker, and I ask Missouri's citizens to do the same.

As always, please feel free to contact me or my staff with any questions or concerns at any time. We look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions and trying to answer any questions you may have. You can reach us by phone at 866-277-0882 (toll-free) or 573-751-2272, or by fax at 573-526-7381.

Senator David Pearce serves Bates, Cass, Johnson and Vernon counties in the 31st State Senatorial District.
