Boy, did we jump the gun...

We got all excited a few weeks back and announced that the $30 display ads on our home page were "quite simply the best deal ever". Well, it turns out that the brains behind this operation have come up with something else the totally beats that deal, hands down...

We are proud to announce an advertising program that not only beats the heck out of that one, but no other web site has attempted anything quite like this! Here's how it works:

1. Place your classified ad for as little as $1 on HeartlandTrader.com (no credit card? send us a check with your ad and we'll put it up for you!)

2. Your classified ad will mysteriously show up in as many as 8 places on the Bates County Live home page in rotating* order.

3. Your ad will also be in rotation in news stories on our readers mobile devices! (even Facebook hasn't solved that problem!)

Wow! here's one in the middle of this story:

4. Your ad will show in rotation in news that our readers get by email!

5. Your ad will be placed in our news feed with the stories on our Facebook page!

6. Your ad will be 'tweeted' from our special Twitter Deals account (separate from our news tweets). Simply click here to follow us on Twitter and you will receive tweets that are just Heartland Trader Classifieds! Again, you can get Heartland Trader ads by following us at https://twitter.com/HeartlandTrader

7. BONUS-BONUS-BONUS: If you place a minimum 30 day classified ad on Heartland Trader, we'll also PUT IT ON CRAIGSLIST on your behalf!

A quick recap:
Your Heartland Trader ad can appear all over the Bates County Live home page, in RSS news feeds, news stories, news emails, on our Facebook page, Craigslist and by Twitter tweets!
ALL THAT FOR AS LITTLE AS ONE MEASLY DOLLAR!

*Note- Rotating order means that single ads change (rotate) every 6 to 8 seconds. Ads appear in random order and rotating begins after the page has loaded on your screen.

Crops aren’t the only things stressed during the drought

Disasters create stress in our lives. For people in agriculture, drought adds to other stresses already experienced by farm families. Studies show that stress may be even greater for young farmers, those holding an off-farm job and women in farm families.

The Missouri Department of Mental Health and University of Missouri Extension have provided the following information concerning stress and how to deal with it.

We need to realize that drought stress may be different than stress in other disasters because a drought is an extended event and does not have a single moment of impact. The anxiety builds over time and becomes chronic, making it less noticeable to ourselves and those around us. The drought may not be viewed as seriously as a tornado because the damage is not as visible. Its impact is worsened for already stressed farm families and communities.

People should be aware of the following signs of stress:
Irritability and anger
Feelings of anxiety and worry
Headaches or gastrointestinal complaints
Increased risk-taking behavior
Changes in eating or sleep habits
Increased alcohol or drug use
Forgetfulness
Fatigue
Sense of helplessness
Lack of concentration
Avoidance or denial
Sadness

To help with coping with stress, the Missouri Department of Mental Health offers the following suggestions:

Acknowledge and talk about feelings. Family, friends and neighbors can be helpful listeners and may share some of the same worries. Participating in church or spiritual renewal activities also can be sources of comfort and assistance in difficult times.
Eat healthy and get adequate sleep. Engaging in recreation or a favorite hobby, getting away for a few hours with friends, reading a good book, volunteering to help others, and finding time to laugh can help.

Nurture personal relationships. Couples should make time to be alone, to talk and to have fun. Families should re-establish important rituals such as mealtimes and holiday celebrations. Children may need additional support ― listen and be reassuring.

If stress, anxiety, depression or physical problems continue for more than a few weeks or if someone is having feelings of extreme hopelessness or extreme anger, talking about suicide or is violent, it is important to seek help immediately. Contact a physician or community mental health center as soon as possible.

Route H/South Deepwater Creek: Bridge Replacement to Begin August 1

DUE TO CONSTRUCTION DELAYS THE CLOSING OF THE BATES COUNTY ROUTE H/SOUTH DEEPWATER CREEK BRIDGE HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1

Bates County -- The closing of Route H at South Deepwater Creek east of Butler has now been set for Wednesday, August 1, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Route H will remain closed at the South Deepwater Creek bridge until late September.

The old bridge is being replaced as part of MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program.

Weather and/or construction delays could alter the dates the road is closed and reopened.

The bridge was originally scheduled to close in early July. However, MoDOT requested the contractor doing the bridge project delay the closing on Route H until other Safe & Sound bridges in the area could be completed.

Senator David Pearce to Take Part in Blue Ribbon Panel Discussions

JEFFERSON CITY — On July 25, Sen. David Pearce, R-Warrensburg, will join members of the Missouri Eating Disorders Association (MOEDA), including the group’s vice-president Annie Seal, in kicking off a series of panel discussions designed to bring awareness to the continuing issue of eating disorders in the Show-Me State.

“In our country, eating disorders are more common than Alzheimer’s disease,” Sen. Pearce said. “While the groups with the fastest rising incidences of eating disorders are teenage boys and women over 40, young women in their teens and in college are still at great risk for developing an eating disorder. It is currently estimated that 4 percent of female college students have anorexia. This is one reason that the city of Warrensburg, with the University of Central Missouri in the heart of the community, makes the ideal platform to begin these statewide discussion panels.”

The first of the Blue Ribbon Panel discussions will take place July 25, at the Johnson County Community Health Services, 723 PCA Road, Warrensburg, Mo., 64093. The panel will begin at 3:00 p.m. in the lower-level classroom and will continue until 5:40 p.m. All concerned citizens are encouraged to attend.

“The epidemic of eating disorders is of extreme concern to me,” Sen. Pearce said. “I certainly ask any citizen affected by an eating disorder to bring his or her questions and previous knowledge to share with other community members in the hope that we can address this issue thoroughly. Knowing that so many citizens are suffering, either from a disorder or as a family member of a victim, I am constantly seeking out ways to bring awareness to the devastating effects that this type of mental illness can cause. I will continue to work in the Capitol to bring beneficial legislation to the Senate in hopes that we can address this serious need.”

A provision in Senate Bill 754, passed in 2010, created the Missouri Eating Disorder Council under the aegis of the Missouri Department of Mental Health. The original language in that legislation was sponsored by Sen. Pearce in Senate Bill 744 the same year.

In addition to discussions including the effects of eating disorders on the body, the topics of insurance coverage for eating disorders, legislation affecting eating disorders, and advocacy will be addressed.

Beehive of activity at Butler R-V...

New Projects at Butler R-V

This summer has been another busy one at Butler Schools with several projects near completion. At the elementary, four projects will be completed before school begins. We are pleased that the sidewalk to the east of the elementary, next to High Street was completed as a joint project with the city. The city was gracious enough to assist with the tear-out, which enabled the district to complete other identified projects. The sidewalk was cracked, uneven, and hazardous to walk on even when there was sufficient light. Now with the city’s help, it is only a memory.

An additional playing surface was renovated at the elementary playground so that students can have more days outside when there is wet weather. I do realize that mud and any type of precipitation may only exist in our long-term memories, but history tells us that those conditions may return.

We have retiled three bathrooms and the lone project yet to be completed is to move the bus lane for loading and unloading to the west of the multi-purpose building. One of the issues the elementary will always have is that the location is locked right in the middle of a residential area, creating traffic issues for the many who choose to pick-up and drop-off their children at the school. By moving the bus zone to the west, we will reduce traffic to the bottle-neck at the corner of High Street and Dakota Street. No solution will completely solve this issue, but we hope that this will help move traffic more efficiently and keep our students safer.

At the high school, the east lot was resurfaced to prolong the life of the pavement and backdrop curtains will be replaced in the auditorium. The most frequent question I have heard about is the activity at the track facility. In the coming months, you should see a concrete pad installed to the west side of the track. At the end of October, a new home bleacher system will be in place so that we can become a host to track meets in the spring of 2013. Once the bleachers are in place, a security fence will encompass the site for additional protection. We are pleased that so many of our community members use the facility and as we continue our progress, it will become more user friendly.

The projects that the district has undertaken have focused on student safety and instilling pride in our school system. In the next few months, we will be creating a Strategic Planning Committee that will look at some of our long-term facility needs. We need business leaders, senior citizens, parents, and our school staff, to help us make informed decisions. While it is easy to identify needs one to two years down the road, we need to hear from you about our long-term goals. Members of this committee will be asking our patrons their thoughts and feedback on district identified priorities. If you have a desire to serve on this committee please give Alan Stauffacher, district superintendent, a call at 679-0653.

For the kids,
Alan Stauffacher

Be proactive with expected rising food costs

Tammy Roberts, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist

It is no secret that the summer of 2012 is one for the record books because of the heat and drought. One of the ways we will continue to feel the “heat” from this summer is the increase in the cost of some of our favorite foods. Since we expect food costs to rise, we can start habits now to save food dollars.

In 2013, the foods in which we will see the highest cost increases include beef, pork, eggs and dairy products. “These are not the foods that we can easily just eliminate from the menu” said Tammy Roberts from University of Missouri Extension. “But there are ways to stretch your food dollar so you can still enjoy all of your favorite foods.”

The first thing we can do is be sure that we eat all of the food we purchase. That may sound like a ridiculous statement but according to a University of Arizona study households throw away about $600 worth of food in a year.

“To make sure you won’t be throwing food away, plan for the use of leftovers” said Roberts. That can mean having a “potluck” night to clean out the refrigerator or it can mean packaging leftovers from dinner for lunch the next day. Keep a plastic container in the freezer to add leftover vegetables. When it gets full, you are very close to having vegetable soup.

Compare the costs of brands of food. The store brand will usually cost less and be perfectly acceptable in quality. Don’t be afraid to stock up on non-perishable foods when they are on sale. If you can use it, the economy size is often (but not always) a better price per serving.

Plan on going to the store no more than once per week. If you plan meals around store ads, make a list and shop wisely you can save time and money. According to the Food Marketing Institute, we spend $2.17 every minute we are in the supermarket so just being organized and sticking to your list helps to save money. While making your list, check your refrigerator and cabinets for ingredients you already have on hand making sure to only buy what you need.

We can’t make the cost of food go down but we can shop wisely and manage the food we have on hand to get the best value for our food dollars.

Small Steps to Build the Economy

From the desk of Senator David Pearce

Navigating the obstacle course of a downturned economy is difficult, to say the least. I know many people in the 31st District and across the state are preparing for back-to-school shopping and the crunch on the wallet that comes with it. However, Missouri does offer a program that can help alleviate at least some of the stress that comes with sending kids back to school.

The Back to School Sales Tax Holiday, as the name implies, is a three-day period during which certain back-to-school purchases are exempt from sales tax. The dates for the 2012 event are Friday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 5. Items typically included are clothing, school supplies, computers, and some computer accessories.

By visiting the Missouri Department of Revenue’s (DOR) website (follow the link above or visitwww.dor.mo.gov/business/sales/taxholiday/schools), you can view a complete list of items, as well as the maximum value per item that the tax holiday covers. For example, the cost of a single article of clothing cannot cost more than $100, personal computers cannot exceed $3,500, and software for computers tops out at $350.

The statute that creates this tax holiday does allow cities, counties, and districts to choose whether or not they will participate in the event. Every county in the 31st Senatorial District is participating, however your city or community may not be. Please check the website (see above) to verify that the community where you plan to shop has not chosen to opt out of the tax exemption.

If Missourians can save a few dollars that can possibly be reinvested in other ways, the cycle of the economy is fed and small steps are taken to repair and rebuild our state’s economy. In the precarious position we find ourselves in these days, those small steps can make a big difference.

If you have any questions regarding the 2012 Back to School Tax Holiday, please visit the website, or contact DOR via e-mail at salesuse@dor.mo.gov.

As always, please feel free to contact me or my staff with any questions or concerns at any time.
