A walk across America includes a stop in Archie

James Anania is like most of us- concerned about racial relations, civil unrest and political issues.

But instead of stewing about it, James decided to do something constructive- so he is currently walking from Washington D.C. back to his home in Los Angeles carrying a large cross.

As fate would have it, Anania was making his way through Archie today and was greeted by Sonjia McGuire of Butler who got a few minutes of his time to discuss his mission.

Anania is hoping his crusade will help promote peace and understanding among fellow Americans. McGuire says she enjoyed the short visit before he began making his way west out of town.

From the Vernon County Sheriff's Office

We have been getting calls about rumors of people dressed as clowns assaulting people. There have been no valid reports or any issues with clowns in the Vernon County area, and no confirmed incidents involving clowns in the surrounding areas.

All incidents reported to the Sheriff's Office have been followed up on and turned out to be false.

Arrest made in El Dorado shooting

Today the Cedar county prosecutor filed charges against Richard Sailors, 53, in connection to a shooting yesterday in El Dorado Springs that sent the victim to a Kansas City area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Sailors was arrested at a home at 509 S. Forrest St without incident. During the arrest, police found a gun that may have shot the other man.

Currently Sailors is being held on $50,000 bond; if convicted he could be facing 10 to 30 years for first degree assault, three or more years for armed criminal action and up to four years for the unlawful use of a weapon.

Bumper crop may cause storage issues

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Sept. 12 crop production report estimates corn production up by 11 percent over last year. USDA predicts 3 percent more soybean this year.

Crop producers will have more grain to sell at lower prices in 2016. Storage might become tight after this year’s excellent wheat yields, says University of Missouri Extension agricultural engineer Charlie Ellis. Although not as big as 2014, this year’s bumper crop will take longer to haul, dry and store than in past years, Ellis says.

Crop cash receipts—the cash income from crop sales—are expected to fall 3.7 percent in 2016 as prices for cash crops continue to decline. Since hitting a record high in 2012, corn receipts are forecast to fall 37.7 percent over the four years through 2016.

That motivates farmers to hold grain for feeding or a later sale.

MU Extension offers guides and customized spreadsheets to help farmers make good decisions about storage, says Joe Zulovich, MU Extension agricultural engineering specialist. Charts, spreadsheets and guides are available atbit.ly/2cKXhuI.

In previous years, some agronomists and economists called for leaving corn in the field as a way to store it. That is unlikely in 2016 due to crop conditions in parts of the state.

Moisture-related problems make storage even more challenging this year, says MU Extension agronomist Bill Wiebold. Excessive rain, coupled with high dew points, makes corn and soybean ripe for disease in much of the state. Scattered cases of diplodia, corn ear rot, stalk rot and seed sprouting call for affected crops to be harvested and dried quickly.

MU economist Ray Massey recommends MU Extension’s “Grain Bin & Storage Cost” decision tool to look at the cost of commercial storage and drying when corn prices are low. Users input information from their operation to help with decision-making in changing agricultural markets. Download the free spreadsheet at bit.ly/2cRbaoK.

More Missourians are buckling up! Statewide survey shows a 1.5 percent increase

Results of a recent statewide survey reveal that Missouri drivers and passengers are buckling up more in 2016, but still have much room to improve.

Based on 123,678 observations of Missouri drivers and passengers in this year's statewide survey, the safety belt use rate is 81.4 percent, up 1.5 percent from 2015. This is still far behind the national average, which was 88.5 percent in 2015.

Safety belt usage ranged from a low of 63 percent in Jackson County to a high of 95 percent in Montgomery County. The survey also indicated that females tend to buckle up more than males with 85 and 78.6 percent respectively. Pickup truck drivers are only 69.7 percent likely to buckle up, while drivers of sport utility vehicles buckle up at 86.7 percent.

"It's vital that the driver and all passengers are buckled up every trip, every one, every time, day and night," said Bill Whitfield, chair of the executive committee for the coalition. "Ninety-four percent of the time driver error is responsible for a crash, and your safety belt is your best defense if a crash occurs."

Modern vehicles are safer than they have ever been. Integrated safety systems such as airbags and crumple zones have drastically increased chances of crash survival. However, all of these safety improvements are designed with the assumption that the occupants of a vehicle are properly restrained with a safety belt. Not wearing a safety belt severely undermines a vehicle's ability to keep its passengers safe in a crash.

As of Sept. 29, 669 people have died in Missouri traffic crashes this year, an 8% increase over this time last year. Of those deaths, 439 were vehicle occupants who had a seat belt available, but 60 percent chose not to wear a safety belt and were killed. Many of these people might be alive today if they had simply buckled up.

Bicentennial license plates- your vote counts...

All Missourians can celebrate 200 years of statehood with a new automobile license plate that will be out in time for the Show-Me State’s bicentennial in 2021, and the public is invited to vote on the design options presented below.

She works incredibly hard to keep her grades as high as possible. Holly is not ashamed to ask for help when it is needed. She goes to tutoring sessions after school and still participates in sports, while maintaining her grades. Holly is a loving and caring person. She helps others when she can. She is an excellent teacher’s assistant. She is calm and patient with other students.

I believe Holy is an extraordinary person. I admire all that she does, which would overwhelm many people. Holly is the type of person who will be able to achieve any goal she sets.

Keith Smith, English Teacher, states “Holly is ALWAYS willing to help any student with problems. Very respectful of teachers. Never derogatory and always compassionate.”

Brad Dunkin, History Teacher, states “Holly is dedicated, inquisitive, and reliable, Her contributions to our school are unmatched and highly valued.
