Drexel Fire Department responds to car fire in Miami County Kansas

The Drexel Fire Department responded to a car fire on Saturday afternoon around the area of 359th and Metcalf rural Miami County Kansas. 

Upon arrival to the scene crews observed one vehicle fully involved in fire.

The fire was extinguish and all Drexel Fire Personnel returned to quarters within 45 minutes. 

It was reported the vehicle was being worked on at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was a total loss.

Obituary - Rebecca Hansen

Rebecca "Becky" Hansen, 57, Harrisonville, MO died April 29, 2017 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. Funeral services will be held 10:00AM Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Burial in Orient Cemetery, Harrisonville. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday May 2 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. A complete obituary will be added when it becomes available.

This photo taken by Butler Fire Chief Jason Bennett pretty well sums up the amount of rain in Butler over the weekend, which so far has brought with it some power outages, downed trees, blocked roads and flooded basements..

At this time, light rain continues and if you're out, you'll see telltale signs such as the swelling of Miami Creek by the Butler water plant.

Good news- it's tapering off somewhat although we are still under a Flash Flood Watch through today. Use caution if you're out and about!

Miami Promenade

A little rain didn't stop the evening festivities at Miami High School. Both singles and couples alike strolled by an enthusiastic crowd before heading for a night of food, music, dancing and Project Prom.

            

Highlights from Butler Promenade

A near capacity crowd filled the gym as a seemingly nonstop stream of dapper young men and women strolled by. Next stop is Clinton Mo. for a meal and dancing, followed by a trip back to Butler for the all night Project Prom.

      

Flooding around the area

 The Bates County Sheriffs Office is reporting swollen creeks and impassible roads around the area. Expect conditions to worsen as rain is forecast through tomorrow.

Use extreme caution or limit travel if possible. Mid America Live will continue to provide updates as they become available.

High water sweeps vehicle off road

The Adrian fire department is responding to a report of a vehicle swept off the road by flood waters on county road NE 15004. Initial reports are the the occupants are safely out of the vehicle. 

Expect more flooding as rain is forecast to continue through the overnight hours. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

 

 

Promgoers: A slight change in plans

HD Photo has announced that due to rain, photos will be taken at the Union Restaurant in Butler, as they have a nice brick wall as a backdrop- and more importantly, it's inside.

Time will be from 1 to 4:45 pm to accommodate couples from both Miami and Butler schools. Cost is $30.

Miami will have couples park by the north end of the school and enter the doors by the preschool room and promenade down the hallway through the cafeteria.

Butler promenade will begin at 4 pm in the high school gymnasuim  and all guests are asked to arrive by 4 pm and plan to stay until buses depart at approximately 5:30. Buses are expected to return by midnight.

Turn in unused drugs until 2 pm today

Don't flush or throw away unused or unwanted prescription drugs- you can safely have them disposed of by dropping off at the Bates County Health Center today until 2 pm.

The Bates County Health Center is located at 501 N. Orange st. in Butler.

Lightning strike leaves hole in highway

The Missouri Highway Patrol posted this picture earlier today on Twitter, showing the true power of a lightning strike. It happened on the shoulder of I-49 in northern Bates County. Fortunately, there was no adjacent property damage and no injuries to passers by.

Rain...and lots of it

Flooding will be a major concern as the day progresses, current radar shows a continual flow of inbound moisture from the southwest.

There is a lot going on in the area today- plan accordingly and remember to NEVER drive through running water.

Despite a threat of showers, about 15 cars made it to Sonic for the first annual Cruise Night of 2017. Plan ahead for cruise nights the fourth Friday of the month through Summer.

Government Spending

(2018 Operating Budget)

“What I'm not saying is that all government spending is bad. It's not - far, far from it, but there is no free lunch, as a former colleague of mine used to say. There is no public tooth fairy. Father Christmas does not work on the Treasury staff this year. You can never bail someone out of trouble without putting someone else into trouble”. Economist, Arthur Laffer

The one Constitutional mandate for each legislative session is for legislators to pass an on-timeand balanced budget. One question that should be asked about every budget is whether Missouri taxpayers can afford it. Shouldn’t taxpayers themselves be a high priority when deciding the application and extent of government spending? After all they will be obligated to pay whatever we appropriate. Should the constitution be considered? It is written to limit government’s reach; is there any better way to appraise government reach than how and where it spends tax dollars? A constituent comment comes to mind – he said to me: “the difference between Democrats and Republicans is who they give your money to.” I wish that did not seem so true.

The Senate perfected our version of the budget this week and will now conference with the House to resolve the differences with their budget recommendations. The biggest budgeting challenge we face every year is to find ways to best fund our public schools while maintaining control over the rapid growth in entitlement spending (essentially the redistribution of income). The ever-rising cost of Medicaid, for example, seems to demand every new tax dollar. Missouri’s constitution, however, prioritizes education. Except for paying our debt, tax dollars spent on education are given first priority and must be 25 percent of our general revenue. The proposed budget has education funding (HB2) at 34 percent and totals just under $6 billion. Combined with local tax dollars, Missourians will spend approximately $10,000 per K-12 student on average.

This year’s projected spending on entitlements, dominated by Medicaid, is just over 10.9 billion dollars including federal funds. That represents approximately 39 percent of the proposed budget. Clearly the two budget leviathans are entitlements and education, combining for around 73 percent of this year’s budget. The competition was never more vivid than when, during floor debate on education spending, an amendment narrowly passed that put an additional $45 million into education. Because that requires $45 million to be removed from one or more other budget items, the scrambling began. The senate and the house must now confer to determine what spending will be reduced.

Thank God for the Senate appropriation and House budget committee members and the committed and capable staffs who are willing to spend long hours finding savings, identifying efficiency improvements and calculating re-prioritized expenditures. Missouri’s newest budget currently stands at $27.8 billion, the largest in Missouri history and that is after paring back many of this year’s budget requests. Government spending is growing which means government is growing. Art Laffer’s observation in the above quote was validated by this year’s budget process: “…You [government] can never bail someone out of trouble without putting someone else into trouble.”

This group of TSA members make Adrian proud. 26 students to Rolla for competition, 2 chapter awards, 1 collegiate award, $1500 in scholarships, 16 finalists, 6 third place finishes, 2 second place finishes, 3 state championships, 1 SW Regional VP and 1 State President. Congrats to Junior Robert Reese for being elected MO TSA State President and FR Mary Wood for being selected as a SW Region Vice-President AND a couple of awesome advisers ~
