4-H Press Release: State meats judging contest‏

COLUMBIA, Mo.– The University of Missouri Extension 4-H state meats contest on Feb. 7 drew more than 30 competing 4-H members. More than 50 FFA students also participated as practice for upcoming events, said Bob McNary, interim state 4-H youth specialist in charge of the event. Participants visited meat labs at the MU Division of Animal Sciences and identified 30 cuts of meat during the judging.

According to Alan J. Mundey, Bates County 4-H Youth Specialist, Bates County was represented by Harrison, Andrew and Etienne Wepener from the Countyline 4-H club. Both Andrew and Etienne finished in the top 10 in the junior division.

The Randolph County 4-H Club (8-13 years) took first and third place in the junior meats judging. Second place went to Monroe County 4-H’ers.

Top individuals in this group were William Crain, Monroe County, first; Quincy Wiegand, Randolph County, second; Alaina Link, Randolph County, third; Martina Joseph, Randolph County, fourth; and Austin Mitchell, Randolph County, fifth.

Senior meats team winners in the 14-and-over category were Monroe County, first, and Jasper County, second. Individual winners were Danielle Herrin, Monroe County, first; Anne Marie Anibal, Jasper County, second; Maddison Breid, Monroe County, third; Sam Anibal, Jasper County, fourth; and Ashlyn Peterson, Monroe County, fifth.
