Bates County Sheriff's Department Press Release: Moving Forward

On 9/23/13 work began on the roof of the Future Law Enforcement Museum.  The Bates County Sheriff’s Posse purchased the old Museum from the Bates County Historical Society in September of 2011.  The Sheriff’s Posse was formed in 2009 and is a Not for Profit organization.   The Sheriff’s Posse holds annual fundraisers to include the Ultimate Horseman’s Challenge held at the fair and the annual Poker Run in the fall.  Support for these events has been great and a driving force in the fundraising.  Support has also been received from donations that have been mailed in and volunteer workers.

The roof, projected at a cost of approximately $11,000.00, is the first major construction project to happen at the Future Law Enforcement Museum.  Once the roof is on, other projects like restoration of the cell area can begin.  Moving the old jail cells from the old High School where the Police Department was located will be the next project.

Sheriff Anderson says, “We are very excited about moving forward.  Getting the roof on the building was a priority; you have to get the water damage stopped before you can move forward on a project like this.  While this is a major milestone on the restoration project we still have a long expensive road ahead.”

If you would like to make a donation to help restore the old jail you can contact Jami Page at 660-679-3232 or stop by the Sheriff’s Office at 6 W Ft. Scott, Butler Mo 64730
