Missouri State Highway Patrol: Man had 800 pounds of pot in truck

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -Prosecutors say a man was charged with drug trafficking after he allegedly drove 800 pounds of marijuana through Springfield on his way from California to New York. Prosecutor Kevin Young says 56-year-old Ashot Grigoryan was charged Wednesday.

A probable cause statement says a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper who stopped Grigoryan's 32-foot refrigerated truck earlier this year on Interstate 44 found 36 cardboard boxes and five nylon bags full of bundles of marijuana. His paperwork said Grigoryan was transporting stir fry sauce.

The Springfield News-Leader reports (http://sgfnow.co/1QcA8rS ) charges were delayed because authorities thought the case would be tried in federal court but federal prosecutors deferred to state officials.

Grigoryan's bond was set at $10,000 with an agreement to reduce it to $2,500 if he appears in court.

Sedalia Police Department releases photos of captivity box

The Sedalia Police Department has released photos of the box Sandra Sutton was kept in by James B. Horn Jr. at his residence in the 800 block of East 15th Street in Sedalia. The photos show the homemade plywood box contained a sleeping bag and reading materials, and was covered in blankets as makeshift insulation, as described by Sutton in court documents.

Sutton, 46, was held captive by 47-year-old Horn in his residence since January and she escaped captivity April 30.

According to court documents, once officers arrived on scene after her escape, the victim stated she “escaped from being held against her will from” a residence in the 800 block of East 15th Street. “(The victim) further explained to the initial reporting officer that she knew the captor and their initial relationship had been intimately consensual.

“(The victim) explained that James B. Horn since January would put her in a wooden box to be held ‘hostage’ when he was not at the residence. (The victim) explained that during the time when Horn was home he would allow her to be out of the box but to return to the box upon his demand.”

Sutton was allowed to leave the box while Horn was home in the evenings, and he would have sex with her. She said she complied out of fear.

During her initial interview with officers, she described the box as made of plywood and lumber with “sound proofing on the outside,” and various items were kept inside, including sleeping bags, reading materials and flashlights. After officers obtained a search warrant, they found a wooden box matching her description.

According to the documents, the box was 100 inches long, 48 inches wide and 52 inches tall, and had one small hole to allow air to enter. The items found inside the wooden box also matched Sutton’s statement.

Sutton and her 17-year-old son, Zachary Wade Sutton, were found dead of gunshot wounds at a relative’s house in the 700 block of East Franklin Street in Clinton in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 21. A statewide manhunt for Horn ensued, including a standoff later that day at his residence in Sedalia, which ended without his capture.

At about 11:15 a.m. Saturday, May 23, a team of investigators from the Missouri Rural Major Case Squad entered a vacant home in the 1200 block of SE 650 Road near Green Ridge in Johnson County after receiving an overnight tip that Horn was known to frequent the area. The house was a former caretaker’s house for the Kearn Memorial Wildlife Area.

Pettis County Sheriff’s Office deputies found Horn in a closet holding a handgun. He refused to surrender, and after threatening the officers with his weapon, they shot and killed Horn, ending a 24-day search for the suspect.

St. Clair County Sheriffs Office: Domestic assault arrest

Jerry Usher
On May 27, Jerry Usher, 26, Republic, was arrested on two St. Clair County felony warrants. One warrant was issued on Sept. 2, 2014 and charges Usher with class C felony domestic assault-second degree. The charge stems from an incident on Aug. 30, 2014 when a St. Clair County deputy responded to a domestic assault in progress on SE 801 Road, Collins.

On arrival, a female victim explained she was physically assaulted by Usher. She said she went to a neighbor’s residence and got into a truck to flee. As they were driving from the scene, Usher allegedly stopped the truck and grabbed her, threw her out of the vehicle onto the ground and was chocking her. She said the neighbor stopped Usher and then Usher attacked the neighbor. They left the scene to call for help. Bond is set at $10,000 cash or surety.

The second warrant was issued on Sept. 3, 2014 and charges him with a probation violation on an original class C felony charge of possessing a controlled substance from an incident in May 2013.

Miller had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and has been missing since Oct. 25, 2014 when he wandered into the woods near his home and did not return. From rain to...war?

While California has a drought, we have quite the opposite. Only three days were reported to have no precipitation during last month and yes, there's water everywhere.

While it's a matter of major inconvenience for farmers and others who have outside work to do, there's another type of storm brewing. A full blown mosquito invasion.

Mosquito larvae thrive in pools, puddles, and standing water. A very short incubation period means that you may be hearing that familiar, high pitched buzzing in your ear soon, if not already.

Experts are saying this season may be the worst we've had in a while due to extreme amounts of rainfall- but there are some things you can do to better protect yourself. We've compiled a list of links below to help make your Summer a little more bearable and safer, too!

Highway Safety Hazardous Moving Violations / Aggressive Driving Traffic Enforcement Saturation — Memorial Day Weekend, 2015

Over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, deputies of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office conducted overtime traffic enforcement on primary highways throughout Henry County on a grant awarded by the Missouri Department of Transportation / Division of Highway Safety, for the purpose of conducting traffic stops for hazardous moving violations during this period. Working in a combined effort with the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, the goal of all participating agencies is to reduce the number of fatalities as a result of motor vehicle accidents on state highways each year.

The grant application was completed and submitted by Major Rob Hills, which awarded the Sheriff’s Office just under $ 5,500 dollars of overtime salaries, to pay deputies for additional enforcement activities over the holiday travel periods in 2014 and 2015, including various weekends throughout the summer months when traffic totals peak in Henry County.

The grant has been utilized over the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays in 2014, along with the Memorial Day holiday this year, which so far has accounted for 235 moving violations and 70 non-moving violations being encountered by deputies during saturation periods, to include two (2) arrests for driving while intoxicated, five (5) arrests for drivers with revoked / suspended licenses, three (3) arrests for drug-related charges and four (4) arrests for outstanding warrants.

“During holiday periods and summer weekends, our local highways are being utilized by many more travelers than what we normally encounter, however our families and friends still have to use these same roadways every day, regardless of the day or the occasion. In order to make our roadways safer as we all travel upon them, enforcing violations for these dangerous actions is an important task that we must undertake”, Sheriff Oberkrom stated.

The “Click It or Ticket” safety belt / child restraint enforcement campaign, which began on May 18
th, will continue throughout the end of this month. BUCKLE UP & ARRIVE ALIVE..!!
