Residents received a bleak newspaper on the morning of April 28, 1972.
The cover of that paper was largely devoted to the actions of a lone gunman one week prior, on April 21, 1972. The reverberations of his spree, which left three dead on the Harrisonville square, shook a community.
The gunman, Charles Simpson, was 25 at the time and armed with a single weapon — a 30-caliber M-1 carbine that was later recovered, along with 360 rounds of ammunition, according to the Democrat’s account.
