HELLEN COOK NEWS UPDATE: Family of Hellen Cook hopes to reform missing person's procedures
SEDALIA, Mo. -- The family of Hellen Cook will be meeting with two State Representatives on Sunday evening in the hopes of bringing about major reforms in missing person cases.
The meeting comes in the wake of Hellen Cook's disappearance. What are believed to be the remains of Cook, who went missing from her vacation home in Benton County, were found on August 11, near a lake where her personal items were discovered weeks before.
Pending DNA test will positively identify the remains. The family has confirmed the items found with the remains as those belonging to Cook.
Cook, 72, suffered from Alzheimer's disease at the time she walked away from her property on July 13, 2013. Her family thought she might be trying to get back to her former home in Buckner, which is east of Kansas City.
In a press release, the family identified the desire to look into a number of procedures including categorizing missing persons, standard alert procedures, compiling a list of databases, standard and recommended search procedures, a list of search resources, a list of media outlets where information may be released, and guides for families.
In the release, Cook's family stated, "We sincerely hope that these reforms are adopted in order to prevent futures tragedies."
The meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Perkins in Sedalia.
