Vernon County Sheriffs Office: Vehicle runs out of gas during pursuit, car stolen from Kansas City

Stolen 2014 Avenger

One person is in custody after a vehicle pursuit early Monday morning on East 54 near
the Cedar County line. According to a press release from the Vernon County Sheriff’s
Office, Deputies began pursuing a 2014 Avenger on East 54 near Walker corner. The
vehicle was traveling at a high speed and was swerving all over the road according to
reports from the deputy just before he attempted to stop the car. When the car did not
stop, the deputy began pursuing the vehicle bringing the number of pursuits this year for
the Sheriff’s Office to 23.

The deputy notified dispatch at one point that the driver threw something out of the
window and had responding deputies check the area where they were able to locate drug
paraphernalia and what is believed to be methamphetamines . The vehicle continued to
flee on East 54 but then speeds began dropping until the car came to a stop just before the
Cedar County line. The driver whose name has not yet been released was taken into
custody by Sheriff’s Deputies. It was later discovered the car had ran out of gas.

Deputies were notified by dispatch that the vehicle was stolen from an impound lot ran
by the City of Kansas City. Additional paraphernalia and suspected methamphetamines
were located in the vehicle as well. The Sheriff said the number of pursuits is alarming,
but deputies are using their training and it is paying off. “A supervisor is notified and
constantly monitors each pursuit” said Mosher. “We were able to recover a stolen
vehicle, remove some drugs off the street and no one was injured. That’s the most we can
hope for” the Sheriff said.
