Police Search For Man That Ran During Traffic Stop In Butler

 Man flees on foot 
 At approximately 10:45 pm tonight while a Butler Police  officer was executing a traffic stop on a vehicle in the Bear Stop parking lot. A male passenger of the vehicle decided to flee on foot running north through a field towards West Street. The Butler Police Department being assisted by the Bates County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit are canvassing the area to attempt to apprehend the suspect. Bates County Live will keep you updated if and when any more information becomes available.

The Bates County Sheriff's Department encourages Everyone to please use extreme caution and reduce speeds while driving tonight. Interstate I-49 is extremely dangerous north of Butler. Please reduce speeds and watch for emergency workers working multiple slide offs and roll overs. If you don't have to travel please stay inside and safe somewhere. The weather is only going to get worse. The Bates County Sheriff's Office will update any and all changes in driving conditions and weather.

Rollover Accident North Of Butler of I-49

The Butler Fire Department along with the Bates County Sheriff's Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to a 1 vehicle rollover accident on Southbound I-49 around mile marker 133.8 just North of Butler. Unknown at this time of injuries it's very slick out there please use caution when you are traveling and as always if you don't have to travel please stay home. Bates County Live will update this accident and all accidents when information becomes available.

Two accidents working on I-49

The Bates County Sheriff's Department along with the Adrian Fire Department are headed to the scene of a 3 car accident with 1 vehicle rolled over on I-49 about 1.5 miles south of Adrian. Extent of injuries is unknown. Another accident is in the wrap up stages on I-49 near AA highway. No injuries reported. The Road conditions appear to be worsening as freezing precipitation is starting to cause black ice conditions. Likewise, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter weather advisory due to rain, sleet and snow expected through 6 p.m. tomorrow.

Fundraiser planned for Amsterdam community building rennovation

After many years of use, the Amsterdam Community Building is in dire need of repairs and remodeling. A benefit dinner and auction is set to take place on February 15 at the building located on Y highway in Amsterdam. The schedule includes dinner at 5 p.m. to include chili, potato soup, dessert and drinks.

An auction will begin at 6:30 featuring items donated by local merchants, along with baked goods.

As a special attraction, a new game will be played called "Fowl Shot"- similar to the famed Bessie Bingo game played on main street each year at Jubilee. The winner in Fowl Shot will receive the tidy sum of $500.

Trying to Prevent Tobacco Use

On Tuesday, February 4, 2014 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will announce the launch of its first national public education campaign to prevent youth tobacco use.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease, disability and death in the United States, causing more than 480,000 deaths each year. Nearly 90 percent of established adult smokers smoked their first cigarette by age 18, making early intervention critical. And each day, more than 3,200 youth in the United States try their first cigarette and more than 700 teens become daily smokers.

The campaign, an unprecedented effort for the FDA, uses visually compelling and personally relevant ads to educate youth about the dangers of tobacco use and encourage them to be tobacco free.

Family owned business announces Grand Opening of new location

Mention Byrd's Pecans anywhere around the area and the name recognition is immediate.  The family owned business was the brainchild of Vernon and Mary Ann Byrd of rural Amoret, whom for many years have maintained a large pecan grove south of Virginia near the Maris Des Cygnes river.

With the grove came a store location in Virginia, well visible from the intersection of 52 and V highways. On some days, from outside the building a constant clicking sound can be heard as cracking machines process and package pecans that are widely distributed around the area.

While Vernon Byrd passed away some time back, the rest of the family continues to operate the business with the same enthusiasm that has made the Byrd's name famous. Jennifer Cassaday, Adrian resident and granddaughter of Vernon Byrd wants to keep the business moving forward and has opened a specialty shop in Adrian. "We are creating a place where someone can come in, sit down, have a slice of pie with ice cream just like the good old days" said Cassaday.

Rich Hill teacher receives statewide recognition

A committee chose her out of all the elementary teachers submitted in Missouri. Later on in February she will attend a banquet in Lake of the Ozarks to be honored for her award.

Weather Update: Snow and Ice Expected

Looks like a range of wintry weather will effect the region over the next 36 hours. Light snow will accumulate across far northern Kansas and north Missouri this morning with up to an inch of accumulation. Light freezing drizzle will spread north from southern Kansas and Missouri this afternoon, with freezing rain tonight across parts of central MO. However, late tonight expect a wide swath of snow to spread east through Kansas and Missouri bringing additional snow accumulations through Saturday.

Vernon County Sheriff's Department Felony Arrest Warrants

Two people are behind bars after Vernon County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to make an arrest on a felony warrant service at a home in Deerfield.

According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, two Vernon County Deputies were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Tyler Millman when a second subject climbed through the window in the back of the house and tried to escape.

The subject who was then identified as John D Howell JR, 21 of Nevada was arrested by a Sheriff’s Deputy on multiple warrants including a probation violation warrant and a warrant for unlawful use of a weapon. Tyler Millman, 21 of Bronaugh was also arrested from that address shortly after on a felony warrant for tampering with a motor vehicle. Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said Millman had hid in the attic, but came down and surrendered after Howell was taken into custody. Both subjects are being held in the Vernon County Jail.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, a St. Clair County arrest warrant was issued for Kyli Turner, 25, Higginsville, for failing to appear in court on a seat belt violation and two class A misdemeanor charges for possessing up to 35 grams marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. Several chances of snow over the next 7 days...

The good news: Temps will not be quite as cold as it has been.

Bad news: Things might get slippery.

Starting today with a high of about 48, there is a 30% chance of rain; things cool a little with a high around 32 and a 30% chance of snow tomorrow.

For the next week, expect daily highs to range between 30 and 40 degrees with a wintry mix of sleet/snow on Saturday, 80% chance of snow on Tuesday and a 30% chance of snow late next week.

Adrian family escapes serious injury in I-49 accident near Harrisonville

It is being reported that Kim Dennison of Adrian was not seriously injured in a two-car accident this afternoon just South of Harrisonville in the northbound lanes of I-49.

Dennison's two children were traveling with her and were also not seriously injured, according to a witness.

The Painful Price of Propane

A short time ago, propane was affectionately known as the 'best value' in fuel- but no longer- local prices have exceeded that of gasoline. Prices jumped from a buck something to around $4.50 in short order over the past few weeks spurring a frenzy among consumers and propane sellers alike.

Bates County Live spoke with a local propane delivery agent, who asked to remain anonymous- "It's tough making a delivery to say, a single mom who's on a tight budget anyway. Then we have to tell her there is a minimum purchase AND it's gonna be $4 a gallon. I'm not sure what people are gonna do". According to the Propane Education and Research Council there are 900,000 U.S. farms that depend on propane as well as six million households that use the fuel as their main form of heating.

National news sources say it's the old supply and demand thing. We've had a colder than usual Winter so propane stockpiles are running low. Or are they? Suppliers interviewed yesterday were quoted as saying "We're still gonna be able to get it, but prices just keep going up".

The Attorney General’s Office has announced it will investigate the cause of the rise in the price of propane gas locally. Last check yesterday found propane at $3.50 a gallon in Bates County- nationwide, however, prices can be found well over $5. As of now, Governors of 33 states have declared states of emergency as propane gets more expensive.

According to Northfield News, a propane shortage could be partially the result of a natural gas shortage and adding to the misery was the rupture of a natural gas pipeline on Saturday in Canada that has interrupted the the flow to the United States. On top of that, propane is one of our leading exports to Europe and maintaining that supply route has only worsened the situation here. 

The quintessential question of the day: when will prices go down? At this point there doesn't seem to be any solid speculation when we might see prices as they were last year.

Fortunately, Spring is not too far away.

Pipeline project digs up money for local economy

The new Flanagan pipeline will run parallel to an existing
line from northern Illinois to Oklahoma

Driving through Northwestern Bates County, you can't help but notice plenty of heavy machinery and temporary road crossings marked with bright colored pennant flags overhead.

The influx of earth movers reflects a small portion of a pipeline installation project which involves burying about 600 miles of 36-inch diameter pipeline that will initially carry 600,000 barrels per day of heavy crude oil from Northern Illinois to Oklahoma.

The Enbridge new Flanagan South pipeline project has stirred up more than dust around Bates County- while there's a lot of talk, there's a lot of money flowing into the local economy. Just ask Jackie Nieder, owner of Diehl's Corner and Campgrounds in Passaic. "The additional campers has allowed us to upgrade our park from 6 overnight spots to 22. We also opened our store and the extra traffic really helps. And by the way, those staying in the park are some of the nicest, most polite people you would hope to meet" said Nieder.

Local comments indicate there is a fair amount of those against the project for environmental and safety reasons, although the new pipe is being laid next to a line that has already been in the ground for about 60 years.

Risk aside, the influx of cash is quite welcomed by business owners in the North/Northwest part of the county, just ask anyone at McBee's General Store in Amsterdam, which is literally a few feet away from a crew of about 20 who has been working to put the pipeline under the highway for several weeks now. A drive by McBee's reveals a fairly full parking lot with a steady flow of customers seeking hot coffee and food.

A little further up the road, the city of Archie appears to have been taken over by the project-at least that's how it might look from I-49. A massive storage area lies just north of the overpass, while a new campground lies just south. And yes, local merchants in Archie, along with Casey's and Yoss Thriftway in Adrian are enjoying an uptick in business too.

So how long will it last? It appears some crews are already moving out of the area to points a little further southwest. Others may stay through March, possibly as late as June depending on weather delays.

Weather Update: Two Chances For Snow

Weather Update: For those of you feeling left out from the snow everyone else has been getting, fret not, as there are several chances for light snow upcoming over the next several days, mostly across areas north of Interstate 70. The best chance for light snow will come Friday night into Saturday morning. The exact location of the highest snow amounts remains somewhat uncertain, but a general expectation is that areas of N Missouri will get between 2 and 4 inches of snow through Saturday.

The Butler Fire Department is in route to 406 East Ft. Scott Street in Butler on a small grass fire that is out of control in the back yard of the residence. Reminder to all Butler residents there is a burn band in Butler and no one is suppose to be burning until we get some moisture. Bates County Live will update this story when and if more information becomes available.

Weather Update: Wednesday Afternoon Fire Risk

Here's a quick look at the forecast through the end of the week. There will be an elevated wildland fire risk tomorrow afternoon as relative humidity values fall into the 20% to 25% range mainly south of St. Joseph to Kirksville. Winds will also be rather strong with gusts to around 30 mph Wednesday afternoon. Thankfully not nearly as strong as we've seen recently. There are also several small chances for light snow Thursday and Friday. Little or no accumulation is expected Thursday. Better chances will occur Friday but any accumulations are expected to be less than half an inch and mainly across northern Missouri.

Threat investigation leads to drug possession arrest

Yesterday, Bates County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to Adrian in reference to threats being made. Deputies notified the Adrian Police Officer who spoke with the victim. She stated that her estrange husband had made threats toward her over the phone. Deputies then responded to Rt1 Box 389 Butler to speak with the male subject. That subject was identified as Micheal H Kreitler, 63. Kreitler spoke with officers about the threat. Kreitler was asked if he prefer to step inside the house to conduct the interview about the threats. Once the deputies were inside the residence then they observed a florescent grow light and 13 white Dixie cups with plants growing on the counter. When asked what it was, Kreitler admitted that he was growing marijuana. An additional search of the residence revealed a felony amount of marijuana.

Kreitler was transported to the Bates County Jail. Today, Prosecutor Jenkins charged Kreitler with possession of a controlled substance and bond was placed at $10,000.00 cash or surety.

Bates County Trooper receives transfer

Effective December 1, 2013, Trooper Gabriel J. Jenner transferred from Zone 14, serving Bates County, to Zone 7, serving Jackson County. Trooper Jenner was appointed to the Patrol on January 3, 2011, as a member of the 93rd Recruit Class. Jenner was born in Columbia, MO, and graduated from Greenville, IL, High School. In 2010, he earned a bachelor's of science degree in criminal justice from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Semi Truck High Centered In Butler

The Butler Police Department is on scene of a 18 wheeler that is high centered on the railroad tracks on Rice Road in Butler. The semi is currently off the railroad tracks and is currently working on getting turned around and on its way.

Use caution if you are traveling in this area as they attempt to get the truck turned around.

Clinton Woman Arrested On St. Clair County Felony Warrant

On Jan. 22 Chrisandra Jones, 32, Clinton, was arrested on a St. Clair County warrant for a class C felony charge of passing bad checks. The warrant was issued on Dec. 24, 2013. Bond was set at $250 cash only and a court date of Feb. 21 was given.

On Monday, Jan. 27, an arrest warrant was issued for Michael Rapue, 24, Liberal, charging him with class D felony of first degree property damage. Bond is set at $5,000 cash or surety.

The charge stems from an incident on Jan. 9, when deputies responded to a burglary in progress at the Riley Harris residence on DeLaporte Street, Collins. Rapue was found in Harris’ garage throwing items out of a boat. Rapue admitted he was under the influence of methamphetamine, cocaine and was drinking the night before. Rapue was initially arrested on warrant for a parole violation.

Missouri Fence Laws Workshop Coming to Butler‏

MU Extension State Fence Law Workshop

Robert Frost's wisdom "Good fences make good neighbors" has endured for more than 100 years.In Missouri, that depends on where you live.

Joe Koenen, University of Missouri Extension ag business specialist, will explain state statutes governing fences during an upcoming workshop that will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 27, 2014.

The workshop will be available via an internet connection in Butler at the MU Extension Office.

"Missouri continues to have a very complicated fence law, due in large part to two separate laws covering the state, depending on the county that your land is in," Mr. Koenen said. "Another problem is that both laws are subject to interpretation," he said.

Mr. Koenen will provide an overview of both laws, as well as the landowners rights and responsibilities.

The program will originate in Northeast Missouri, where Joe Koenen is located and will be broadcast to other locations like the Bates County Extension Office in Butler via an interactive internet connection. Participants at all locations will be able to ask questions and interact with one another.

The cost is $10 per person, which includes materials. Space in Butler is limited and individuals should preregister by contacting MU Extension in Butler, MO, at (660) 679-4167 or by e-mail at jennermw@missouri.edu.

Missouri Attorney General to investigating propane price hikes

The Attorney General’s Office has announced it will investigate the cause of the rise in the price of propane gas. Attorney General Chris Koster acknowledges that he received a request from Senator Mike Parson (R-Bolivar) to conduct an investigation, and says forty consumers have filed complaints with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division about increases.


Consumers say the price of propane gas has gone from about $1.91 in December to about $5.00 recently.


In a statement Koster says, “Missourians are justifiably concerned about the dramatic increase in propane prices, affecting their ability to heat their homes and care for Missouri-based livestock,” Koster said. “I want to thank Senator Mike Parson and many others who have highlighted this important issue and brought these complaints to our office. We are currently investigating all complaints, and working with businesses and agencies in 9 other states across the Midwest to determine the cause of these price increases.”


On Friday, consumer investigators with the Attorney General’s Office took part in a multi-state conference call with representatives of the propane gas industry. Distributors and analysts say a sharp increase in the export of propane and higher winter consumption have created a shortfall in supplies of domestic propane.

75-year-old Lowell Ray Tillery, Nevada, passed away Sunday at Freeman-West Hospital, Joplin. Arrangements are under direction of Heuser Funeral Home, Rich Hill, and a memorial service is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 1, at the funeral home with burial to be scheduled later in the Green Lawn Cemetery, Rich Hill. Early Morning Structure Fire North of Passaic

Around 3:45am this morning the Adrian and Butler Fire Departments was called out to a structure fire 1 mile North of the 4 way stop in Passaic just past MoKan Livestock Yard. When the fire broke out there was 2 people in building they made it out with one man going to the hospital with minor burns. The Fire Departments had the fire under control by 4:08am.

Building Collapse In Appleton City : 1876 Saddlery building Appleton City, taken by wind 1/26/14

Last night January 26, 2014 at approximately 9 pm. The Appleton City Volunteer Fire Department and Appleton City Public Works Employees responded to a building collapse on main street in Appleton City. The building was built in 1876 and was formerly the Saddlery Building. 

The building is now owned by Steve Collins and was currently being used for equipment storage. No one was injured in this and the crews worked hard to remove debris from the road with a skid steer and shovels. The building owners would like to Thank all friends for helping start the clean up process.
