Vernon County Sheriffs Office Press Release: Early Morning Pursuit Send Nevada Man to Jail‏

Picture of the truck as it was being towed
from the yard of a homeowner where it stopped
in the pursuit.
An early morning pursuit ended with the arrest of a Nevada resident Tuesday. According to a press release from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, a 1985 Chevy truck had been driving around in the median on I-49 near the Sheldon exit early Tuesday morning. When a Sheriff’s Deputy approached, the truck took off heading the wrong way on I-49 and continued to flee from deputies around the southeast part of the county. A supervisor was then notified who monitored the conditions of the pursuit. The truck headed East on E Highway and entered into Cedar County where it turned North on 96 Highway. The truck was hit with spike strips by the Missouri State Highway Patrol shortly after turning onto 96 Highway but continued to try and outrun the deputy’s despite having several tires deflated. Deputy’s and the Highway Patrol continued to pursue the truck until it turned down a dead end road in Cedar County. The driver, whose name has not yet been released was taken into custody at that time. According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said the driver is being charged with numerous traffic violations including DWI, driving in the wrong direction, failure to stop for an emergency vehicle, exceeding the posted speed limit as well as other traffic violations. Mosher said the speeds of the pursuit were under constant observation. “We were monitoring the speeds and locations of the pursuit the entire time. Pursuits are always a hard decision to make.” The Sheriff said this was not a high speed pursuit. Cedar County Deputies who arrived on scene turned custody of the suspect over to Vernon County. The suspect is being held on an investigative hold pending the filing of formal charges.

Looks like our wet, though pleasant, weekend has come to an end as cold air swept in across the Plains States last night. This will keep temperatures running a little below normal through much of the work week.

Temperatures will moderate back up towards the end of the work week, but not before a fast moving winter weather system zips through northern Missouri late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Finger amputations lead to stroller recall

(CNN) — About 4.7 million Graco and Century-branded strollers are being recalled after its maker received reports of 10 full or partial fingertip amputations and one laceration, federal officials said Thursday.

Eleven models of strollers have a folding hinge on the side that “can pinch a child’s finger, posing a laceration or amputation hazard,” officials said.

Caregivers are being advised to show “extreme care when unfolding the stroller to be certain that the hinges are firmly locked before placing a child in the stroller,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

“Caregivers are advised to immediately remove the child from a stroller that begins to fold to keep their fingers from the side hinge area,” the agency said.

Atlanta-based Graco Children’s Products received six reports of fingertip amputation, four reports of partial-fingertip amputation and one finger laceration, the product safety agency said.

The firm manufactured the strollers in China and will be providing a free repair kit beginning in December.

About 202,000 strollers were also sold in Canada, and about 10,300 more were sold in Mexico, the federal agency said.

Graco said its recall is voluntary.

“Over the past 60 years, safety has been and will continue to be the priority at Graco,” the firm said on its website. “As part of our continuous effort to provide quality and safe products, Graco identified that select stroller models, including some of our LiteRider models that were sold before the updated hinge was available, have folding hinges that could in rare circumstances have the potential to pinch a child’s finger, posing a laceration or amputation hazard.”

The recalled models are Aspen, Breeze, Capri, Cirrus, Glider, Kite, LiteRider, Sierra, Solara, Sterling and TravelMate model strollers and travel systems.

The models bear a manufacture date from August 1, 2000, to September 25, 2014, and were sold at Target, Toys R Us, Walmart and other retail stores nationwide and online. The prices were $40 to $70 for the strollers and $140 to $170 for the travel systems.

Missouri corn crop averages more than 200 bushels per acre

COLUMBIA, Mo. – With more than 90 percent of the state’s corn crop harvested, the University of Missouri Variety Testing Program reports yields far exceeding national averages.

MU Extension specialist Bill Wiebold said Missouri averaged more than 200 bushels per acre. “Those are amazing yields,” he said.

Wiebold said this is the best yield he has seen since he began working with the program in 2000. Yields in northern Missouri, where fields are not irrigated, topped 200 bushels per acre this year. Yields in 2013 were 150 bushels per acre.

“When you see yields averaging over 200 bushels across the state, it’s an indication of good weather,” Wiebold said. He also credited improvements made in hybrid yields by seed corn companies.

USDA predicts record-high average yields of 173.4 bushels per acre nationally. High yields may help offset low prices of $3.01 to $3.32 per bushel across mid-Missouri Monday.

Yields topped the 300 bushel per acre mark at irrigated test plots in southeastern Missouri. Good soil and irrigated fields in that part of the state create consistently high-producing yields, Wiebold said.

The Division of Plant Sciences in the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources has conducted the variety-testing program for more than 75 years. Since 1973, seed companies and groups have chosen several of their best varieties for evaluation at farmer-owned fields and MU test plots. Test fields are located in 14 farmer fields and four MU farms throughout the state. MU researchers publish unbiased results online and in a booklet.

Wiebold said plants on a couple test sites were destroyed by thunderstorms and green snap, which is the sudden breakage of cornstalks by strong winds during the rapid-growth stages of the corn.

The highest mean yield in the test was 308.3 bushels per acre, with the grand mean at 279.2 bushels per acre in the southeast region. The lowest mean yield was 222.7 bushels per acre.

The Nov. 17 USDA Crop Progress report said 100 percent of corn has been harvested in the southern regions of Missouri. USDA reports more than 16 percent of the corn crop remains in the field in northern Missouri, where rainfall delayed harvest for more than a week in October.

Wiebold reported that northern Missouri’s nonirrigated fields yielded 236.2 bushels per acre. The lowest-testing varieties produced 192.5 bushels per acre, with the grand mean at 215.6. Harvesting is about 80 percent complete in northern Missouri and more than 90 percent done in central Missouri.

The nonirrigated central region of the state produced a high mean yield of 245.7 bushels per acre and a low of 193.8. Grand mean was 220.7 bushels per acre. Irrigated fields of central Missouri produced a high mean yield of 269.9 bushels per acre. Low was 194 bushels per acre and the grand mean was 232.6 bushels per acre.

Irrigated land in southwestern Missouri shows the lowest yields statewide. The highest yields there were 181.5 bushels, the lowest 166.3.

Snow Doesn't Stop Steinway Supporters

Blair Penney of Schmitt Music in Overland Park
tickles the ivories with everything from ragtime
to the classics at the Butler Presbyterian
Church yesterday
Music lovers gathered yesterday afternoon at Butler Presbyterian Church for a SOS: Save Our Steinway event hosted by the Bates County Museum. Although snow kept the crowd smaller than expected, the warmth and enthusiasm of those in attendance was undeniable.

Peggy Buhr, Museum Director, welcomed everyone and gave an update on the progress of the fundraising campaign. $17,235 had been raised thus far and donations received at the event brought the total to over $18,000. Buhr delivered a personal commentary on the recent passing of C. A. Moore, who was a member of Butler Presbyterian Church, and stated she knew C. A. would be thrilled with the day’s program. The church and the 1877 Steinway have strong connections. Miss Eunice Pyle donated the piano to the museum in 1979 and she was a member of Butler Presbyterian Church her whole life.

Buhr also announced that an article in “Rural Missouri,” the electric co-op’s state wide publication, will be forthcoming and is scheduled to be published in December. The article is a direct result of the earlier article in the Kansas City Star that ran in October. “It seems people everywhere are excited and supportive of this enormous endeavor,” Buhr stated. She believes people are eager to be a part of something big, something that can be beautiful and enrich the lives of all involved.

Progress is being made to raise funds
necessary to refurbish the museum's
historic Steinway piano
Mr. Blair Penney of Schmitt Music in Overland Park, Kansas presented a program that included music and a PowerPoint presentation. Playing on the church’s beautiful Steinway, he opened with a Billy Joel’s Root Beer Rag and proceeded to include works of Clair de lune by Dubussy, Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, and George Gershwin’s ‘S Wonderful, I’ve Got Rhythm and ended with Rhapsody in Blue. The visual presentation was incorporated throughout the program as Blair told the history of Steinway & Sons followed by raising awareness of how special the museum’s 1877 Steinway Model B Grand Piano truly is. According to Penney, the effort to raise the funds necessary to restore the old piano are more than justifiable and would provide Bates County with an extraordinary instrument to be enjoyed by citizens for many decades to come. The $50,000 investment will result in a piano valued at approximately $100,000.

The afternoon program concluded with a drawing for an award winning DVD, “Note by Note,” that follows the year-long journey in the creation of a new Steinway. Elizabeth Ogg, Bates County Economic Development Director and concert pianist, was the lucky winner.

Following the program, guests mingled and enjoyed an elegant dessert buffet provided by Sally Hatten, Donna Talbott and Dotty Esher. On display was a unique piano keyboard graph poster that can now be used to track the progress of fundraising efforts. Kenna Bartz, Bartz Photography, designed the poster and donated it to the cause. Many thanks are extended to Butler Presbyterian Church for their hospitality and use of their lovely church and piano. Future fundraising events are now being planned and several people volunteered their service at Sunday’s program. If you are interested in becoming involved in this project you may contact Peggy Buhr at the Museum by calling 660-679-0134.
