Butler city wide cleanup coming soon

Each spring and fall the City of Butler in cooperation with Bates County Disposal conducts a city wide cleanup of residential properties. This is a service offered to residents to give them a chance to discard items not taken during weekly trash pickup.

Please note the clean up service is for residential properties only. We will not pick up tires or construction and building materials such as lumber, plywood or shingles. There is a one pick up load per household. If you have a larger amount you must make special arrangements with Bates County Disposal by calling 660-679-5654. Any items not picked up must be removed from the curb immediately.

Bates County Disposal will pick up old furniture, appliances, paint, batteries and miscellaneous junk. The City of Butler will pick up your brush and limbs placed at the curb. Brush and limbs and trash or junk must be maintained in separate piles at the curb. Cleanup items must also be separate from your regular household trash that is picked up weekly. The city wide cleanup does not affect your regularly scheduled trash pickup.

The city wide cleanup is divided into two one-week periods. One week includes all residences south of Fort Scott Street. The next week includes all residences north of Fort Scott. Items to be removed must be on the curb before 6:00am on the Monday of your clean up week. Items may be placed on the curb no longer than one week before pick up.

I receive numerous complaints each season concerning households that set items on the curb anticipating the spring or fall clean up. You must wait until the clean up dates are announced and then you may set clean up items on the curb no more than seven days in advance. This season the clean up rules will be actively enforced. To avoid getting a ticket, set clean up items out on the curb no more than seven days before the scheduled pick up.

Another complaint I feel needs addressed is littering. I often receive complaints in reference to people placing old furniture and junk items on the curb and leaving them for extended periods of time. Often I find where a tenant or homeowner has just simply moved away and left the items on the curb without making arrangements to have them picked up. Before placing furniture, appliances or other junk on the curb or out in plain view, you must make prior arrangements with Bates County Disposal or similar company to have the items removed.

Section 14-62 of the Butler City Municipal Code defines littering as:
A person commits the offense of littering if he or she drops, throws or places or causes to be dropped, thrown or placed any glass; glass or plastic bottles, paper, plastic or Styrofoam cup or glass, wire, nails, tacks, hedge, tree limbs, leaves or other lawn waste products, cans, garbage, paper, gum, candy, cigarette or any other type of wrappers, cigarette or cigar butts, or refuse or rubbish of any kind, nature or description on the right-of-way of any city street, road, alley-way, park, sidewalk, or any other public property or on any private property owned by another without the property owner's permission or consent. (Ord. No. 872, § 1(Exh. A), 10-7-08)

Under the current ordinance, if you place or leave furniture, appliances or junk on a right-of-way or on a property, and you have not made arrangements to have them removed, you could be subject to criminal penalties for littering. Don’t move away and leave a big mess for someone else to clean up and pay for.

If you have any questions contact Officer Rich of the Butler Police Department at 660-679-6131.
