Helen Elizabeth Riddle, 94, Independence, MO, formerly of Butler, MO, died Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 25 at the First Christian Church in Butler, MO, with visitation from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the church, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian, MO. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler. The family suggests contributions to the First Christian Church of Butler or the Kansas City Hospice Center.
Helen was born December 4, 1917 in Amsterdam, MO to John Franklin Lankford and Ina Cecil Bruce. She married William Fred Riddle in Butler, MO on September 14, 1935 and to this union two children were born. Fred owned and operated the Butler Auto Parts Store, with Helen being a homemaker for her family. She was devoted to her children and had a special love for her grandchildren. Helen was a member of the First Christian Church, Better Homes Club, Butler Country Club and loved playing bridge with many different groups around town.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 62 years, Fred, two sisters, Opal Poindexter and Anna Mae Furhman, and one brother, Bruce Lankford. She is survived by her son, William Fred Riddle Jr. and wife, Ann of Bradenton, FL; daughter, Francine Ballinger and husband, Forrest of Grain Valley, MO; 4 grandchildren, William Fred Riddle, III (Mary) of Farmington Hills, Michigan, Stephanie James of Commerce Township, Michigan, Aimee Mahoney (Mike) of Blue Springs, MO and Scott Summers (Kim) of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX; 6 great-grandchildren, Nicole and David James, Allison and Daniel Irwin and Joey & Kayly Summers; 2 brothers, Franklin Lankford (Dorothy) of Colorado and Harold Lankford (Pauline) of Springfield, MO.
