UPDATE: Missing Fisherman on Stockton Lake

Missouri Water Patrol officers resumed the search for a missing fisherman on Stockton Lake this morning. Water Patrol officers say the man put his boat in about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Greenfield Access for a day of fishing and has not been seen since. His wife reported him as missing about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when he did not return home. The boat was found and Water Patrol officers have used sonar and dragging equipment in an effort to find the body of the presumed drowning victim.

UPDATE: On Overturned Vehicle South of Butler

 Missouri State Highway Patrol along with Bates County Sheriff and Butler Fire Department is on scene of a roll over accident Northbound lanes of I-49 just North of 52 East Highway. Two people are injured and being transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital by ambulance . One lane of the Highway is blocked. Bates County Live will have the Official Police report from the Highway Patrol when it is released.

Butler Fire Department Responds to Brookside Apartments

This morning around 11:15pm The Butler Fire Department and Butler Police responded to a report of a smoke detector going off at The Brookside Apartments in the 400 block of South Delaware Street here in Butler. Apon arrival they notice what appeared to steam and not smoke. It was quickly determined not to be a fire. The steam was weather related with all the humidity in the air and the all clear was given.

Updated Obituary - Steven Dean Bishop

Steven Dean Bishop, 60, Harrisonville, Missouri, died Friday, May 24, 2013 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. A memorial visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville.

Steven was born November 9, 1952 in Harrisonville, Missouri, the son of Harold and Dorothy (Hopper) Bishop. He was a 1970 graduate of Cass-Midway High School. He was a lifelong Cass County area resident. Steven had worked for Mid-America Graphics in Harrisonville and for Schmidt & Klaus Florist in Kansas City, Missouri.

Steven was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by one son, Christopher Bishop, Independence, Missouri; two brothers, Phillip Bishop, Sedalia, Missouri and Terry Bishop, Drexel, Missouri; two sisters, Debbie Hargis and her husband, Jeff, Cleveland, Missouri and Kim Steele, Belton, Missouri and three grandchildren.

Tornado Watch

A Tornado Watch has been issued for southeast Kansas into central Missouri until 10 PM. Cities in the watch include Pleasanton, Butler, Clinton, Sedalia and Boonville and points south. Thunderstorms are developing south of Highway 50 and these could produce large hail and tornadoes. Be alert in case a tornado warning is issued for your area and be prepared to take cover!

UPDATE: OSAGE VALLEY HAS ABOUT 150 PEOPLE STILL WITHOUT POWER

We have about 150 people still without power. Approximately 120 of those will be restored soon, as crews finish up the repairs near Butler. Crews are also working on an outage in southeastern Bates County. There is another chance of thunderstorms for tonight so be prepared and stay safe!

Four state park beaches temporarily closed for water quality issues‏

Four state park swimming beaches have been temporarily closed for water quality issues, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

 The state park beaches at Finger Lakes located in Columbia, Harry S Truman located in Warsaw and Wakonda located in La Grange are closed following results of water samples taken Tuesday that indicated bacteria levels higher than those recommended for waters used for swimming. Earlier this week, the state park beach at Thousand Hills located in Kirksville closed due to flooding. The beach remains closed due to flooding as well as high bacteria levels.

 The campground beach at Harry S Truman State Park remains open. Visitors to Harry S Truman State Park may stop by the office or fee booth to obtain a pass free of charge to swim at the campground beach. Once tests from the four state park beaches indicate the bacteria levels are within the standard suitable for swimming, the beaches will reopen.

 The department collects water samples from all designated beaches in the state park system weekly during the recreational season to determine suitability for swimming. Beaches will be closed for high bacteria when a single E. coli sample exceeds 235 cfu/100ml or when the geometric mean – a 30-day rolling average – exceeds 126 cfu/100 ml. The sample test results indicate a snap shot of the water quality taken at the beaches at a specific time; however, a single sample does not provide an overall sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located.

 The department will post the information about the beach status on the website at dnr.mo.gov as well asmostateparks.com. Visitors to Missouri State Parks are able to sign up to receive free electronic notices about the status of state park beaches while visiting the department’s beach status website.

High Street Clinic to be closed on Fridays Now

Beginning June 7^th the Bates County Memorial Hospital High Street Family Care Clinic will be closed on Fridays.  Only the medical clinic will be closed.  Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Jerry Morris’s Clinic will be open on Fridays.

Optimist Students of the month

The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard, and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria. Selection is based on the criteria, but a student stepping up to a particular task will come to play in it. Each student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks”.

The Ballard student for May is Jayme Myrtle, senior daughter of Brian and Stacy Myrtle. Special Services teacher, Paula Hoard states “Jayme is a wonderful role model for the students that attend Ballard. She is willing to do anything that is asked of her. She has worked as a teacher’s aide this year and has provided a positive attitude toward the students, faculty, and staff. She is always willing to help others and works hard at everything she does.

Makalyn Gutshall is the Miami student. Makalyn, a junior, is the daughter of Ed and Cheryl Gutshall. She is very active in volleyball, basketball, track, choir, FFA, and NHS. Makalyn credits both her brother and her friends for inspiration and she plans to major in radiology and nuclear medicine in college. Keith Smith, English teacher states Makalyn is an excellent choice who quietly leads by example and does very good work in class and stays active out of class.

 The Adrian student is Michelle Newsome. Michelle, a senior, is the daughter of Ken Newsome and Julie Newsome. Her favorite activities in school are NHS and band. Outside of school, Michelle enjoys drawing and painting as well as trying out new recipes. Michelle states she could not have accomplished anything without the love and support of her family. For the next step in her education, she plans to attend Longview, then go on to UCM where Michelle hopes to earn a degree in psychology. Adrian staff says Michelle is a hard worker in school and cares much about her academics. She has shown herself to be a strong leader and will do well in her future.

Black Bear Spotted in Lamar

A black bear was spotted late Tuesday night in Lamar. Police Chief Ron Hager says the bear stayed in backyards and a gully as it ambled on a Northerly track. Lamar police officers caught up with the bruin near Seventh and Jackson Streets as it ambled through the community without incident. The bear sighting was reported to Barton County Conservation Agent Scott Brown about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday but he says only one resident and two police officers spotted it and he could not fund any tracks anywhere. The sighting was the first in Brown's tenure as a Conservation Agent but bears have been spotted in Jasper and Lawrence Counties so it would not be that unusual.

Vernon County Drug Arrest

Vernon County Deputies arrested Linda Walters, age 40 of Nevada today for possession of a controlled substance. A warrant was issued on Walters for two counts of possession with a total bond of $20,000. Walters is being held in the Vernon County Jail.
