Butler Elementary Kindergarten Information Night

There will be a Kindergarten information night for parents with children who will begin Kindergarten at the Butler Elementary School in August of 2014 on Wednesday, May 7^th.
It will take place in the Butler Elementary Music Room beginning at 6:30pm and will give parents a chance to meet the teachers, ask questions and gather information.

Faye Joyce Sickman, 81 of Grain Valley, Missouri passed away April 29, 2014 at St. Mary Manor, Blue Springs, Missouri. She was born April 3, 1933 in Herington, Kansas, daughter of Walter and LaVeta (Hankerson) Brown.

Joyce was united in marriage to Kenneth Sickman on December 10, 1949. He preceded her in death on April 7, 2012. Joyce retired from the Kansas City, Missouri school district after more than 20 years as a school secretary. Following retirement, she and Kenneth moved to the farm, where Joyce enjoyed working with Kenneth and raising their cattle. In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed spending time with friends, particularly fishing at the lake. In later years, she became an avid Bridge and Bingo player, and looked forward to her excursions with her friend, Jodi, when they would visit the hairdresser, have lunch together, and head for the Bingo hall. Joyce loved these weekly outings.

Joyce never missed her favorite TV shows to include “Let’s Make a Deal,” “The Price is Right,” “The Steve Harvey Show,” “The Young and the Restless,” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and her husband, Kenneth. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Friend of Jefferson City, Missouri; son Kevin Sickman of Grain Valley, Missouri; nephew Jerry Foster and wife Janice of Paducah, Kentucky; and five grandchildren.

The Butler Bears' Missouri Future Problem Solvers received a 3rd place trophy at State Competition this month! They are given futuristic problems throughout the year and must use their research and analytical skills to solve those problems.

The Butler Bears' Scholar Bowl Team won the District Championship for the second year in a row!!! Now it is on to Sectionals, and if they are victorious, then the State Competition.

St. Clair County Sheriffs Office: Appleton City Hit Hard With Burglaries

On Tuesday, April 29, St. Clair County deputies investigated multiple burglaries that occurred overnight in Appleton City.

Dawnde Robbins and Robert McIntosh, reported a burglary at The Blue Inn, 117 West Fourth Street. Two cash registers and doors to the establishment were reported damaged. An estimated $6 was also reported missing.

Arthur Logan, Shelter Insurance, 129B West Fourth Street, reported $4 was missing from a cash box in his business. Damage was also reported to a door of the business.

Jeff Cross, Zink Motors, 200 East Fourth Street, reported the parts building was broken into and $11 was stolen.

Jay Knowles, AC Auto and Tractor Supply (NAPA), 116 East Fourth Street., reported a punch and $8.25 in quarters was missing from the store..

The information related to the burglaries was turned over to the Appleton City Police Department for their investigation.

John E. “Johnny” Oliphant, 74, formerly of Rich Hill, Missouri, died February 15, 2012 in Harrisonville, Missouri. He was born November 28, 1937 in Hamilton, Missouri, son of John Austin and Millie Martha (Clark) Oliphant. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his step-father, Truman B. Pickering. He is survived by his brother, George Pickering and wife Judy of Lenexa, KS; three nieces: Sharon Kreiling and husband Phil of Lenexa, KS; Susan Martin and husband Dennis of Atchison, KS; and Angela Bonsignore and husband Paul of Lenexa, KS. He also leaves behind four great-nieces, and four great-nephews.

National Day Of Prayer Tomorrow

Jason Klumb

Air National Guard Lt. Col. Jason Klumb has been decorated with the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. The medal is awarded to individuals for non-combat meritorious achievement or service that is incontestably exceptional and of a magnitude that clearly places them above their peers.

Recipients are assigned to or have served with numerous joint activities in the Department of Defense, joint chiefs of staff, joint, specified and allied commands, military agencies, and other joint activities as designated by the secretary of defense.

Klumb serves as the Staff Judge Advocate for the 131st Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., the only Air National Guard unit to fly and maintain the B-2 Spirit bomber.
Klumb is the son of Marli Klumb and Hank Klumb, both of Butler, Mo.

He is the brother of Steve Klumb of Finlayson, Minn., nephew of Gerry Klumb of Jourdanton, Texas, and cousin of Phil Schatz of New York, N.Y.

Klumb is a 1986 graduate of Butler High School, Butler, Mo., and earned a bachelor's degree in 1990 from William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo.

May Is Motorcycle Safety Month

Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to make the public aware of Motorcycle Safety Month. Favorable weather seems to be an invitation to motorcyclists to go for a ride. It's important for motorcyclists to take an active role in their safety. Please keep these suggestions in mind when you're on the road:

* Be visible. Motorists often have a hard time seeing you. Keep your headlight on, day or night. Use reflective strips/decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle. Be aware of other vehicle’s blind spots.

*Dress for safety. Wear a helmet and eye protection. Wear bright clothing. Wear thick or leather clothing for protection. Section 302.020 RSMo. states, in part, “Every person operating or riding as a passenger on any motorcycle or motortricycle, as defined in Section 301.010 RSMo., upon any highway of this state shall wear protective headgear at all times the vehicle is in motion. The protective headgear shall meet reasonable standards and specifications established by the director.”

*Think safety while riding. Give yourself space to react to other motorists’ actions. Use lane positioning to increase visibility. Watch for turning vehicles. Signal your next action in advance. Pretend you’re invisible and drive defensively.

*Know your bike. Get formal training and take refresher courses. Practice riding your motorcycle before going into heavy traffic. Know how to handle your motorcycle in all types of road conditions.

Car and truck drivers need to share the road with motorcyclists and keep the following in mind:

* Drivers should actively watch for motorcyclists.

* Motorcycles may look farther away than they are due to their smaller size. It is also difficult to judge the speed at which a motorcycle is traveling as it approaches.

*Motorcycles are hidden easily in a vehicle’s blind spots, or masked by objects or backgrounds. Thoroughly check traffic before changing lanes!

*Motorcyclists may slow down by downshifting or easing off the throttle. So, you may not see a brake light. Allow extra distance between you and a motorcycle.

*A motorcycle’s turn signal does not cancel after the turn like a vehicle’s signal does. So, pay attention, the motorcycle may not be turning.

*A motorcyclist will often adjust their position in the lane in order to be seen more easily and to avoid debris, wind, or passing vehicles. Allow the motorcyclist to share the lane; don’t assume they are being reckless.

*Stopping distance for motorcycles is similar to that of cars. But, slippery pavement can make stopping quickly difficult. Please allow more distance behind a motorcycle in these types of road conditions.

In support of "The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths," the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Minor Traffic Accident In Butler

The Butler Police Department responded to a minor 2 vehicle accident tonight around 5:15pm. The location of this accident was Chestnut and Water Streets here in Butler. No one was injured in this accident and both vehicles received minor damages.

Bates County Sheriffs Posse Looking For Old Materials

The Bates County Sheriff's Posse is looking for some old materials that can be used to make obstacles for the Ultimate Horseman's Challenge. Suicidal Subject In Adrian

The Adrian Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Bates County EMS and Bates County Sheriffs Deputies responded to the Park Wood Apartments on 8th and Lexington in North Adrian tonight around 6pm on the report of a suicidal subject.

A brief standoff occurred and lasted approximately 45min then ended peacefully and the subject was taken into to custody by The Adrian Police Department.

He was later transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital to be medically cleared. Bates County Live will attempt to get a official press release on this at a later time.

Drug Theft Investigation Concluded by Nevada Police Department: Appleton City Missouri Man Arrested

During the month of February 2014, Nevada Police began an investigation after receiving a citizen complaint that medications shipped from the Veterans Administration Pharmacy had never arrived at a home in Nevada.

Nevada Police Officers began a joint investigations in partnership with the Veterans Administration/ Criminal Division and United Parcel Service Security Office after it was determined that a VA Pharmacy had indeed shipped morphine and oxycodone to various homes in Nevada which never arrived.

This joint investigation developed a suspect known to be a delivery driver for UPS who is suspected of forging the signatures of those patients scheduled for delivery of the medications and then stealing the narcotics.

The Appleton City resident, identified as 29 year old Timothy Ryan Glass was taken into custody on a Vernon County Arrest warrant by Bates County Sheriff’s Department on April 6th.

Glass has been charged with seventeen felony counts pertaining to the theft of narcotics, forgery and possession of drugs. He was released after posting a $50,000 bond.
Citizens are encouraged to contact the police if they have any information that would be helpful to combat crime.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Provides Safety Tips For Severe Weather

Spring has arrived, and along with it, varying temperatures and weather patterns resulting in thunderstorms, flash flooding, and tornados. The Missouri State Highway Patrol offers these severe weather safety tips:

Thunderstorms can include heavy rains, thunder, lightning, tornadoes, straight-line winds, flash floods, and hail. They can form quickly. A typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 30 minutes. ALL thunderstorms are dangerous. When they occur, pay attention to weather reports and instructions.

Tornados can appear at any time of day, any day of the year. Tornados may form during a thunderstorm. When a Tornado Watch is issued, this means to stay alert and aware. Watch the sky and listen to weather reports.

A Tornado Warning means seek shelter immediately. An interior room without windows on the lowest floor is the safest shelter location. Do not seek shelter in a cafeteria, gymnasium, or other large open room because the roof might collapse. Immediately leave a mobile home to seek shelter in a nearby building. Overpasses are not safe. The construction of an overpass can create a dangerous wind tunnel effect. If you are driving, you should stop and take shelter in a nearby building. If you are driving in a rural area, drive away from the tornado to the closest building. If you cannot get away, seek shelter in a roadside ditch. Protect yourself from flying debris by covering your head with your arms, a coat, or a blanket. Be prepared to move quickly in case the ditch fills with water.

Heavy rain can cause flooding, and spring showers will certainly spawn flash flooding. Never drive through fast-moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground. Respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT. They are there to protect you; don’t go around them!

Widely varying temperatures can leave roadways or bridge floors covered with frost. Even though roads appear to be clear, it is important to slow down and watch for slick areas, especially early in the morning. Temperature changes also cause fog to develop. Drivers need to slow down, turn on their headlights, and be prepared to stop in foggy conditions.

Weather conditions requiring the use of windshield wipers are usually those that affect visibility. Motorists are reminded that state law requires them to turn on their vehicle’s headlights any time they are using the windshield wipers. It only takes a second to turn on your vehicle’s headlights. But, that second could make you more visible to other drivers and prevent a traffic crash.

No matter what the forecast: If you’re going to be on the water, you need a safe boating plan. During severe weather, stay off the water. Currents become swift and dangerous. Fixed objects and fast moving water are a bad combination: Don’t go boating in these conditions. Floating debris can easily capsize or sink a boat. After heavy rains, lakes have more debris to watch for. Boaters should always keep an eye on the weather. Hypothermia is also a concern due to rapid weather changes associated with spring. Make sure to take extra clothes and remember that the dangers of hypothermia increase exponentially when temperatures drop. Fog on our lakes and rivers is common during this time of year and results in low visibility. When visibility decreases, boaters need to slow down. No matter what the season: Watch for changes in the weather. When you hear the thunder in the distance, respond to it. Don’t wait until you see the lightning. Get to shore ... Get to safety.

When dangerous weather approaches, whether you are on land or on the water, implement your safety plan, postpone activities, monitor the weather, and get to a safe place.

APPLETON CITY BOYS PLACE 2ND At MIDWAY By Gar Garman Another strong performance by the Appleton City boys track team earned them a 2nd place finish out of 13 teams at the Cass Midway Relays on April 28. Gold medal winners were the 1600m medley relay team of Logan Siegismund, Cole Heiserman, Carter Mitchell and Truman Burchett and 4x800 team of Mitchell, Heiserman, Evan Mitts and Burchett. Finishing in 2nd place was the 4x1600 team of Alex Engeman, Tobi Nitsche, Dakota Wittmeyer and Jonathan Rogers, the 4x400 team of Siegismund, Mitchell, Heiserman and Burchett and in the tiple jump Tyler Piepmeier, Mitchell and Mitts. In 3rd place was the sprint medley of Siegismund, Harrison Boden, Piepmeier and Burchett and in the long jump Piepmeier, Mitts and Jacob Johannigmeier. Finishing 4th in the discus was Nick Bales, Raoul VanDok and Dalton Drake. For the Appleton City girls in 6th place in the high jump was Tabitha Jackson, Mikayla Engeman and Alex Jackson.

Nevada Police Department: Rich Hill Man Arrested after foot chase

Nevada Police report that on April 25th at about 1:30pm, a burglary suspect was arrested by local police after a foot pursuit.

Police were dispatched to the 600 block of N. Cedar moments after a neighbor witnessed an individual force entry into another apartment. A description was obtained by police which led to a neighborhood search by officers.

Within moments, an officer located the wanted subject several blocks away. The suspect then fled on foot from the pursuing officer...s. A 24 year old Rich Hill resident was taken into custody by Nevada Police in the 800 block of N. Cedar. Multiple items of stolen property thrown to the ground by the fleeing suspect were located and recovered by police in the area.

That suspect is identified as:

Felony Warrants have been issued by the Vernon County Associate Circuit Court for Burglary, Resisting Arrest, Stealing, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Bond has been set at $25,000 cash only. The suspect remains in custody at the Vernon County Jail.

MIAMI R-I, AMORET, MO SCHOOL RECEIVES $3,870.00 GRANT Lowe’s Donates Money For ENJOY THE OUTDOORS Project.

Miami School received a $3,870.00 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for an outdoor study and wildlife / gardening enrichment center.

We are thrilled to announce that Lowe’s awarded the Miami School funding for the ENJOY THE OUTDOORS Project. Miami has turned some of the large, but sparse outdoor area into a more enjoyable and comfortable outdoor learning environment for our students. We now have tables, benches, a shaded study area and are in the process of completing the raised garden area for all students to take an active part in planting, growing , maintaining, and learning about horticulture. Our grant application was based on the goal of an alternative to normal classroom studies by taking advantage of all the wonderful outdoor open space for students to read, study and do projects, improving the learning community at Miami.

Research has shown that a change in environment aids learning. Our biology classes can use this area while researching local wildlife. The ecology classes will be able to remain outdoors after taking water or plant samples to study. Physics students can do experiments outside without fear of interrupting other classes. Elementary students will be able to take books outside and have a place to enjoy reading or completing work. The agriculture classes, family and consumer science classes, and elementary classes can all use the garden and planter areas to grow various flowers, herbs, and vegetables for study and use in class. The teachers will enjoy the opportunity to treat their students to a lesson outside!

Miami School would like to thank Lowes for the generous donation and their helpful and courteous staff for their advice and consulting for our project. Vernon County Sheriffs Office: Stolen Tractor Investigation

Vernon County sheriff's officers are investigating the reported theft of a farm tractor East of Nevada. The theft report was filed Monday and sheriff Jason Mosher says his officers are looking into some "tip" information they have received in connection with the theft of the Allis Chalmers tractor.

Butler Lady Bears Track Results

Monday night the Butler track team traveled up to Midway to run in another cold, windy track meet. This meet was an all relays meet and the athletes really enjoy being able to mix things up and getting the chance to do something different. Even though the weather was miserable it was definitely a fun meet to watch!

The girls had a lot of fun changing some things up and worked very well together earning a 2^nd place finish out of 13 Teams.

Here are the top 6 place finishers who helped earn points for the team and contributed to the 2^nd place finish:

Bates County Sheriffs Office: Overnight Burglaries

On April 29^th the Bates County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Rich Hill Police Department in multiple burglaries that occurred over night. The burglaries appear to be only commercial properties and may be connected to the similar burglaries in Appleton City.

The Bates County Sheriff’s Office is asking if you have any information in reference to the burglaries please contact a Detective at the Bates County Sheriff’s Office at 660-679-3232.

Bates County Sheriffs Office: Fleeing Suspect

On April 26^th, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a subject about a vehicle being left in the roadway in the area of 6002 and 5002. The reporting party stated that it appeared to have some fresh damage to the vehicle. Before Deputies could arrive to check the vehicle out dispatch received a call from another reporting party located at 5773 NW CR 4721 stating that there was a subject attempting to steal one of his vehicles.

The reporting party stated he confronted the suspect and he fled westbound from his residence in the field.

Deputies arrived on scene and began to search for the suspect. K9 units arrived and announced that the K9 was going to be released. Upon the announcement of the K9 the suspect began to yell to the Deputies his location. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Charges are being reviewed by the Bates County Prosecutor.

2nd Annual Montrose VFW Poker Run

The 2nd Annual Montrose VFW Poker Run will be held on May 3rd honoring those who served and those that are serving. The poker run funds will be used to pay for Grave Markers for Veterans and their Wives and the National Home.

The run will begin at the Montrose VFW Post, and registration will be from 10:30am – 1:00pm. There is a $20 registration fee which will include a t-shirt and a meal. If you pre-register you will entered into a drawing to win your choice of $1,000 or a trip for two to Las Vegas.

Hume Community News

George and Connie Wehar spent the weekend with their son and family, Jamie and Tami Wehar of Cairo, MO. On Friday they were in Quincy, IL watching their granddaughter Alex play softball, afterwards they enjoyed taking her out to eat. Alex attends John Wood College. On Saturday there were in Kirksville, MO to watch Hannah play softball. Hannah attends Truman in Kirksville. They were returned home on Sunday evening.

The Hume/Rich Hill Alumni Game will be on Saturday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Rich Hill gym. We encourage all alumni to come out and play. There will be a concession stand and a silent auction. They are still accepting donations for the Silent Auction; you can leave them at the Bank in Hume with Sherry or at the Rich Hill School with Kelly Gayman. All proceeds go to Angie Cannon Nicholas and her family. Angie recently underwent breast cancer surgery. So all you alumni come out and play as these two communities come together to support Team Angie!

The community of Hume is very thankful that on Sunday evening we were spared. A huge crowd of people took refuge at the Methodist Church, along with others seeking shelter in neighbor’s basements and their homes. As some watched and all I am sure were praying the tornado shifted missing Hume. We are also extremely thankful for all of those who called to check on us and were coming to our aid in Hume from other towns. As one person stated it was a wonderful feeling to drive into town the next day and see everything in place and all the people we love going about the daily routine. Our God is truly and awesome God!

I want to also praise the Prescott Countryview Nursing Home staff and others who helped keep the residents safe. You did an awesome job! Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who were affected by the tornados on Sunday.

St. Clair County Sheriffs Office: Felony warrant arrest

On April 28, Kenneth Collins Jr., 30, Clinton, was arrested at the St. Clair County Jail on a Henry County warrant for failing to appear on a class D felony charge of driving while revoked or suspended. The warrant was issued on April 25. Bond was set at $1,500 cash only. The charge stems from an incident on July 25, 2013.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Arrest Report From Over The Weekend

On 4/26/14 around 12:20pm The Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested 37 year old Misty D. Morrison from Rich Hill, Missouri. She was arrested on 1.) Vernon County Sheriffs Office warrant. She was booked into the Bates County jail and her status is listed as bond able.

On 4/26/14 around 7:30am The Missouri State Highway Patrol in Ray County Missouri arrested 27 year old Christopher E. Good of Adrian, Missouri. Mr. Good was arrested on 1.) Felony possession of a controlled substance 2.) Possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Ray County Jail on a 12 hour hold.

Butler Bears Track Team: Cass Midway Relays Results‏

Last night the Butler track team traveled to Cass Midway to run in yet again another cold windy track meet. The plus side of the night is that everything is a relay and our athletes really enjoy doing things that they are not used to. That and it is fun for us coaches to watch kids doing things that....lets be honest......they are not good at. For instance: watching Big Dakota Hulse run a 200M dash, Kyle Todd run hurdles, or Austin Castaneda long jump. It really makes for a fun night. With that being said, last night the boys place 6th out of 13 teams. Here are your top 6 finishers who helped their team score points:

3rd Annual Butler High School Alumni 5k Run / Walk

The 3^rd annual Butler High School Alumni 5k run / walk will be held on Saturday, May 24^th. Sign-in begins at 7:30am at the track facility adjacent to the football field on Nursery Street. There will be a fee of $15 which includes a T-shirt. This year, to keep costs down, the t-shirts will be ordered and delivered or mailed to you. There will be an additional fee for the postage / envelope of $3.50. The excitement begins at 8:00am – rain or shine, and is open to anyone who would like to participate, being a Butler High School graduate is not a requirement.

If you would like a t-shirt, orders will be taken during sign-in for the walk / run. If you don’t want to participate in the run / walk, but would like a t-shirt, you may purchase one for $15 or $18.50 if the shirt is mailed to you. Contact Esther Hopcroft at 660-679-3227 to order your t-shirt.
All profits from this event will go to the Butler High School Alumni Association.

Storm Damage In The Bates County and Linn County Kansas Area

Littell Cemetery in rural SW Linn County just NW of Hume, Missouri was hit very hard knocked down and 130 year old church and layed over several headstones. The Cemetery dates back to 1867
