Four Nevada teenagers hurt in early morning crash
Four Nevada teenagers were hurt early today in a one-vehicle crash on Jayhawker Road, four miles North of Nevada in rural Vernon County.
Missouri Highway Patrol trooper Art Torbeck says the accident happened about 4:00 a.m. when an East-bound 1991 Chevy Blazer, driven by 22-year-old Noah Colopy of Nevada, drove off the left side of the road and overturned. Taken to Nevada Regional Medical Center with minor injuries were four passengers: 14-year-old Abbigail Elliott, 15-year-old Dakota Miller, 17-year-old Steven Pettibone and 14-year-old Haley Toland. Colopy was not hurt.
The vehicle was totaled and removed from the scene by the owner, No one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

Appleton City Fair to be on public TV
On Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7:00pm, and again on Thursday and Saturday, Kansas City Channel 19 will feature a story by the KC Star writer Charles Gusewelle.
Mr. Gusewelle's wife was a winner of the Appleton City Stout Prize Baby Show held yearly at the AC Fair, and this will be a feature of the segment, as well as some footage of the 2014 AC Fair. It started in 1903, so many babies have entered the show

KRISTY SMITH is recognized as the Bates County Memorial Hospital Employee of the Month for September, 2014. Kristy has been employed at BCMH since January, 1997. Kristy is the Activities Director of the Nursing Department, as well as working as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Kristy has demonstrated many times over her dedication to the hospital. She is flexible in changing her schedule to meet our needs, whether it is to fill in during vacations, illness or high patient census. Her loyalty and support is greatly appreciated. Kristy is an asset to the hospital and the patients we serve.
REMINDER: Circus coming to town
The Culpepper and Merriweather Circus will be in Butler on Sunday, September 7th with two scheduled performances at 2:00 and 4:30pm. Skeeter, the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus Advance Clown will be in Butler about two weeks before Circus Day.
Arrive early September 7th and watch the raising of the Big Top from 9:30 – 10am as well as animals unloaded and rigging prepared for later performances. A free tour will be offered afterward. The presentation will include a walking tour of the circus grounds where you will learn interesting facts about performers, the history of the show and the care of the circus animals.

Barbara Louise Boyles, age 75 of Archie, Missouri died Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. She was born October 9, 1938 to Howard Payton and Aline Elizabeth Lord Carson in Denver, Colorado.
Barbara is survived by two sons, Johnnie Lee Boyles and wife Yvette of Adrian, Missouri and Larry Ray Boyles and wife Sherry of Archie, Missouri; one brother, Gary Carson and wife Kay of Lacey, Washington; three halfbrothers, Jim Barker, Joe Barker and Terry Barker; and seven grandchildren, Amber, Brandon, Josh, Caitlyn, Larry Lee, Kevin and Missy; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence “Roy” Boyles; one brother, Larry Carson; and two infant children.

Local residents chosen as State Fair Farm Family for Bates County
BUTLER, MO ― Kevin and Mary Fischer of Bates County were among the 110 families honored during the Missouri State Fair’s Farm Family Day on August 11, 2014.
The Fischers were selected as the Bates County Missouri State Fair Farm Family by the Bates County Extension Council and local Farm Bureau.
Each year, the fair sets aside a day to recognize farm families from across the state who are active in their community, involved in agriculture, and participate in local outreach and extension programs such as 4-H and FFA.
The annual event was sponsored by the Missouri Department of Agriculture, the Missouri Farm Bureau, the Missouri State Fair, the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and University of Missouri Extension.

Billee Rae (West) Lee, LaCygne, Kansas and a native of El Dorado Springs, Mo. and a 1948 graduate of El Dorado Springs High School, passed away today at the age of 84. Arrangements are under direction of the Schneider Funeral Home-Chapel at LaCygne and services are planned at 11:00 a,m. Saturday, August 30, at the LaCygne Christian Church with burial to follow in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family receives friends between five and seven o'clock Friday evenng at the funeral home-chapel in LaCygne. Memorials to the LaCygne Christian Church or the Alzheimer's Foundation are suggested.

Medical Condition Causes Auto Accident in Cass County
Around 11:55am this morning the Missouri State Highway Patrol along with The Cass County Sheriffs Office and Pleasant Hill EMS all responded to a 1 vehicle accident on Southbound Missouri 7 Highway and Elliot Road in rural Cass County.
The accident occurred when the 1999 Isuzu was Southbound on Mo-7 Highway when the driver 78 year old Harry E. Avery of Harrisonville, Missouri had a medical condition which caused him to lose control and travel off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a ditch, pole and tree before coming to rest.
Mr. Avery was transported by EMS to Centerpoint Hospital in Pleasant Hill with minor injuries, The vehicle received moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Johnson Tow.

Obituary - Carla J. (Tordsen) Lawrence
Carla J. (Tordsen) Lawrence, 71 of Butler, Missouri passed away August 26, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was born May 22, 1943 in Round Lake, Minnesota, daughter of Carl and Delores (Gingerich) Tordsen.
Carla was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Ronald Tordsen. She is survived by her husband, Dean Lawrence of Butler; daughter Patricia Rea of China; son Larry Lawrence of Springfield, Missouri; daughter Lynne Blevins and husband Dewayne of Sioux Falls, S.D., son Brian Lawrence and wife Crystal of Butler, and daughter Kathy Henderson and husband Allen of Butler. She also leaves behind a sister, Sandra Hardy of San Diego, California and a brother, Craig Tordsen, also of California. Carla is also survived by 32 grandchildren.

Recently, Jeremy Leister, son of Jeff and Beth Leister of Amsterdam, Mo. was promoted to the position of Senior Herd Manager at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK. He had previously held the position of Herd Manager, with Oklahoma State University, since 2011.
Jeremy is a 2007 graduate of Miami R-1 High School. A member of National Honor Society, he was the class Salutatorian as well as class Vice President. He also served as the Miami FFA Chapter President his Senior year. A 4 year-two sport letter winner, in basketball and football. He was selected to the ALL-District team in football his Senior season.
After Miami, Jeremy won a scholarship to Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson KS. While at Hutchinson, Jeremy competed in Livestock Judging for 2 years. He earned his Associates Degree at Hutchinson Community College and went on to Oklahoma State University on yet another scholarship. While at OSU Jeremy continued to compete in Livestock Judging. Jeremy was an integral member of the 2010 National Championship Livestock Judging team.
Upon completion of his degree at Oklahoma State, he was hired as one of the herd managers in the beef operation for the university. He was in charge of one of the herds, responsible for the daily upkeep and production of the herd.
As Senior Herd Manager, Leister will be in charge of all the universities beef herds as well as all aspects of the production the entire university beef operation. In addition he will also be managing all of the show cattle the university raises and be involved with showing at the various national livestock shows across the country.
Jeremy is excited to tackle this new challenge and looks at it as an incredible opportunity

Funeral services for Dr. C.W. “Doc” Marsh will be 10:30 AM Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the Drexel First Baptist Church in Drexel, Missouri with Rev. Mike Cooper officiating. Visitation Friday evening, 6-8 PM at Mullinax Funeral Home – Drexel Chapel in Drexel, Missouri. Burial will follow services in Sharon Cemetery near Drexel. Dr. Charles Woodard “Doc” Marsh, 92 of Drexel, Missouri passed away August 26, 2014 at his home in Drexel. Doc was born June 25, 1922 in Cicero, Indiana, son of Charles William and Olive Ruth (Woodard) Marsh.
Doc was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Rose Marsh of Drexel; daughter Donna Ziegler and husband Joe of Drexel; son Charles William “Bill” Marsh of Shawnee, Kansas; daughter Patricia Deel and husband Daryl of Louisburg, Kansas; and daughter Judy Still and husband David of Drexel; as well as 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Doc also leaves behind his special Angels on Earth, Angie Jenkins, Delores Halbin and Stephanie Cravens.
