Bates County man charged with attempting to escape from custody

Philip Shipley
On June 22, 2016 Deputies responded to County Road 9001 in Drexel, MO in reference to a suspicious person and vehicle. The Deputy located the suspicious vehicle parked behind two rows of hay bales.

The driver’s side door was open on the vehicle and no one was in the vehicle. An area canvass was done by the Deputies but was unsuccessful.

Dispatch then made contact with the reporting party again who advised Dispatch that there was a man at her door. Deputies responded to the residence and found a man walking away from the house.

The man was given lawful orders by the Deputies. It took several commands for the man to comply with the orders.

The man was identified as Philip Shipley (DOB 5/23/1978). The homeowners knew who Shipley was and said he didn’t have a need to be nor should he be at their house. Shipley was issued a warning for trespassing.

Mr. Shipley gave Deputies consent to search his vehicle. While they were searching his car, Shipley attempted to slip his handcuffs from his back to his front. Shipley began to resist Deputies.

During the search of Shipley’s vehicle, Deputies located several homemade weapons. There were also a lot of tools in the car that appeared to be stolen. Shipley’s car was towed from the scene for investigative purposes.

Mr. Shipley was charged with Escape from Custody and his bond was set at $2500.00 cash or surety. More charges are expected to be filed.
