Larry Gene Davis, son of Perry Finley Davis, Jr. and Thelma Lee (Majors) Davis was born June 26, 1943 in Raymore, Missouri. He passed away Friday, May 26, 2017, in rural Appleton City, Missouri at 73 years of age.
Larry had lived a full and adventurous life. He was raised on the farm and after graduating high school he proudly served as a Marine, was a farmer in Missouri, a shrimp boat captain in south Texas, and also captained a swordfishing boat all over the world, including Africa, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
Larry loved working the farm. His fondest memories were spent farming with Grandpa Majors and later with his children. Larry also enjoyed music and loved playing his guitar. He’s played music all his life but his most notable memory was the time he was offered a record deal, but turned it down due to his son’s sickness.
Larry always loved to talk about “The Good Ol’ Days” at sea. In his earlier years, he would be at sea for several months at a time either swordfishing off the east coast or shrimping in the Gulf of Mexico. He was a well respected captain of multiple swordfishing boats, gulf shrimping boats, and even built his own boats for trot lining and bay shrimping. Before retiring, he was interviewed about the time he navigated his boat back from a deadly storm which led to his name being published in the book, “The Perfect Storm”. He was also invited by the Corpus Christi Mariners Club to talk about all his adventures at sea.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jim Davis, son Calvin Davis and nephew Jimmy Davis.
Larry is survived by his sister Pat Sechler (Errett), Springfield, Missouri; eight children: son Bobby Davis, Aransas Pass, Texas, daughter Cindy Clark (James), Appleton City, Missouri, daughter Valerie Davis, Rockport, Texas, daughter Becky Shedd (Dennis), Fairplay, Texas, son L. G. Davis, Portland, Texas, son Chris Davis, Houston, Texas, son Lance Davis (Chanel), Geilenkirchen, Germany, son Travis Davis, Rockport, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Throughout all his travels Larry made friends everywhere he went. He will be missed by all friends and family.
