Obituary - John Edward Petty

John Edward Petty, age 86 of Adrian Missouri, passed away Monday (Bingo Night) May 20, 2013 at his home. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday May 23 at the Adrian Optimist Building. Visitation will be at the Adrian Optimist Building on Wednesday evening, May 22, from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. with Masonic services at 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Heartland Hospice or the Adrian VFW Post No. 1935, 25 West Main, Adrian, MO 64720.

Big John, as he was known, was born January 7, 1927 in Butler, Missouri, the youngest of seven children born to William Harvey Petty and Julia Anna (Jenne) Petty. John spent his youth in the Butler area but would spend his summers working on the Jenne family farm west of Adrian. He eventually bought that farm.

John married Peggy Summers on October 29, 1943. They were 14 and 16. To this union, five children were born. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served during WWII on the USS Sheridan. After his service in the Navy, John returned to Bates County. He and Peggy started their family. Work eventually took them to South Dakota where he helped build Randall Dam. They returned to Missouri and lived in Kansas City for a time before returning to Adrian. John was always a truck driver and spent the 40 years before his retirement in 1989 as a car hauler.

Anyone that knew Big John, knows he never knew a stranger. He went to coffee twice a day. He loved to fish and play golf. He was very active in the VFW, Optimist Club and Masonic Lodge.

John was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Elmer, Midge, Gerald and Billy Petty, an infant sister and one grandson, Brian Petty. He is survived by his wife Peggy, of the home; sisters, Anna Petty Taylor and Irene Petty Adams of Butler, Missouri; one daughter, Cheryl Bagby and husband, Larry of Adrian; four sons, Steve Petty and wife, Linda, Liberty Missouri, Jerry Petty and wife Nancy, Wheatland Missouri, Dennis Petty, and John "Bufe" Petty and wife, Jonna, all of Adrian; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
