JEFFERSON CITY — This week (7-2), a bill ushered through the Senate by Sen. David Pearce, R-Warrensburg, clarifying definitions of a veterans’ program in the Show-Me State was signed by the governor, adding it to the list of bills that take effect Aug. 28.
“Missouri’s veterans and their families have sacrificed so much for our freedoms,” Sen. Pearce said. “The time a deployed serviceperson spends away from home is time without their loved ones, as well as time their loved ones have to continue the daily struggle without a significant portion of the family unit. When the military member returns home, he or she deserves a helping hand to jump start their civilian life.”
House Bill 1680 renames the Heroes at Home program to the Show-Me Heroes program, in order to more accurately reflect the goals of the program. In addition, the measure adds specific definition to who can receive benefits by adding military personnel who are recently separated from military service.
The Show-Me Heroes program helps veterans in finding jobs when they get home. The program will also assist the spouse of an active military member in finding a job and will address immediate financial needs of the family of an active military member during his or her deployment and for a year following that member’s return home.
Through this program, military personnel can get assistance upon returning home with both vocational training and counseling and possible paid internships in order to increase his or her marketability in the job force and increase the chances of solid job.
“I can’t stress enough how much we have to be grateful for in this state,” Sen. Pearce said, “and it is often the veterans of Missouri we have to thank for that. It is my hope that the changes and clarifications in this legislation provide comfort for our veterans and their families, as well as a brighter, stronger future.”
