Butler Youth Center to reopen in September

Starting in September on Tuesdays and Thursday, 75-80 kids will fill the Butler Youth Center at the old high school. While preparations for the 18th year are going smoothly, Kris Jenkins, president of the BCYAC, says that the Center has many needs. “That many kids takes a great deal of basic supplies. Just think what you need for a family of 5 and then multiply that by 15!”

The Center which operates totally on free will donations would appreciate the help of the community and businesses. “While there is a constant need for financial donations to help pay our staff, there are many other ways you can help,” said Jenkins.

The Center has some specific needs that include:

• Paper products such as paper plates, napkins, paper towels and plastic forks and spoons. We go through over 200 plates, napkins, cups and silver wear items a week! We do not need toilet paper or cups!

• Cleaning supplies including toilet cleaners, dish soap, window cleaner, bleach, Pine-Sol, general purpose cleaners, sponges, dish cloths and towels, large garbage bags and kitchen-size trash bags.

• Arts and Crafts Supplies. The major needs are for construction paper, glue sticks, masking tape, duct tape and scotch tape. We also need several staplers and staples as well as address labels to use for name tags. The Center does not need colored pencils, crayolas, markers, fabrics, laces, trims or yarn.

• Game supplies. Board games(new or used), an air pump for balls, softkick balls, a football, plastic bats and balls, soccer balls, basketballs, a set of pool balls and hula hoops. game systems. G rated games for a PS2 and a Game Cube. We could also use an additional gaming system and games if someone has one they no longer use and wish to donate.

• Food for the Center. Fresh fruits and vegetables, microwave popcorn, cookies, crackers, candy, peanut butter and crackers, granola bars, fruit/breakfast bars, peanut butter and chips are always needed.
