Missouri State Highway Patrol Cracking Down on DWIs
Captain Robert L. Powell, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee's Summit, announces there will be DWI checkpoints and DWI saturations conducted in the Troop A area during the month of July.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol, along with the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, will conduct DWI checkpoints in Jackson County between now and the end of July. This operation is an effort by both law enforcement agencies to remove intoxicated drivers from Missouri's highways. The checkpoint will consist of officers stopping drivers at a set location and testing those who have been drinking.
In addition to the checkpoints, the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be conducting DWI saturations in Cass County, Henry County, and Platte County throughout the month of July. Troopers assigned to the saturations will concentrate their efforts on highways which have been found to have a high number of alcohol-related crashes and enforcement contacts.
A sobering fact is that impaired driving contributes to 27 percent of all Missouri fatal traffic crashes. In 2012, 219 people were killed and 3,513 injured in crashes involving an impaired driver. That’s why the Missouri State Highway Patrol, along with other law enforcement agencies, will continue to crack down on drunk driving throughout the year.
Captain Powell stated, "Impaired driving is not just a law enforcement problem. It is a community problem. We urge all citizens to report any driver they observe operating a vehicle in an unsafe manner.” The public can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol toll-free at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on their cellular phone.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol encourages motorists and watercraft operators to protect themselves by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint, and everyone in a vessel is wearing an approved personal floatation device.
