Documentary to be filmed in Rich Hill
The community of Rich Hill, Missouri is buzzing over the recent announcement that Tracy Droz Tragos, Director/Producer from California, is beginning work on a documentary to be filmed in Rich Hill in 2012. Tragos will be working on depicting the life, events, and the struggle to survive that face many small American communities today. Plans are for the film crew to make frequent trips to Rich Hill throughout the year to capture the actual life-happenings of residents in “small town America”.
Tragos, who often visited her grandparents in Rich Hill when she was a child, produced and directed a previous award-winning documentary called “Be Good, Smile Pretty” about her father, who was a fatality in the Vietnam war when she was only 3 months old. That film won an Emmy and has been frequently shown on many PBS stations across the United States, often times around Memorial Day and Veterans Day holidays, and is available on Netflix. Plans are currently in place for a community showing of her film “Be Good, Smile Pretty” at the Rising Sun Opera theater in downtown Rich Hill on Thursday evening, January 12 at 7:00 pm. Admission will be only $2.00 per person and is expected to be attended by a large crowd.
For more information, contact Natalea Hoeper, coordinator for the showing at 417-825-7038.

Toll Roads in Missouri?
From the desk of Senator David Pearce
Just this month, the governor said that converting the main east-west thoroughfare in Missouri, Interstate 70, would be too big of change for the state and would require a large consensus among the public, as well as the Legislature.
With the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) downsizing in these times of economic challenges, the question can be raised regarding how best to pay for the maintenance of our state’s infrastructure. Some believe toll roads are the answer. Toll roads have been used in neighboring states for years, such as Kansas and Oklahoma.
Proponents argue that the utilization of toll fees is one way to avoid paying higher fuel taxes while the state could still benefit from daily road/vehicle usage. If the toll collection area is manned, jobs would have to be created to in order to have employees at the toll sites.
However, opponents say toll roads would have an affect on alternate roadways. If, hypothetically, I-70 were to become a toll road, traffic could increase on Highway 50 or Highway 36 as a result of travelers not wanting to pay to travel. In turn, that could also lead to Highways 50 or 36 becoming toll roads to pay for future maintenance and upkeep. Opponents also wonder who would actually be in charge of the toll collection. A number of states have contracted out the rights to their toll roads to foreign companies.
Toll roads continue to be a topic that sparks much discussion among lawmakers and the general public. At this time, as the governor said, there are no plans to create any toll roads in Missouri. In addition, there have been no bills prefiled in the Senate regarding toll roads in our state. But that is not to say that the idea does not deserve investigation and research by any and all that could be affected.
As always, please feel free to contact me or my staff with any questions or concerns at any time. We look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions and trying to answer any questions you may have. You can reach us by phone at 866-277-0882 (toll-free) or 573-751-2272, or by fax at 573-526-7381.
Senator David Pearce serves Bates, Cass, Johnson and Vernon counties in the 31st State Senatorial District.

Planning on applying for financial aid? Read this...
FAFSA FORMS 2012
If your high school student is planning on College and applying for financial Aid, you might want to pay attention to this press release. Students just register with the Selective Service before you begin the F.A.F S.A form application, for financial Aid. If you are turning 18 in the year 2012 remember to register with the Selective Service before you apply for FAFSA financial Aide, if you don’t the forms will be rejected until you have registered.
Once you complete your FAFSA form, a Student Aid Report (SAR) is generated and sent to both you and the schools that you indicate on your form. Each school’s financial aid office then subtracts your expected family contribution from their school’s unique cost of attendance (COA), resulting in your financial need for that school.
Since there are so many variables involved in computing your unique expected family contribution, it’s hard to give rules of thumb about what someone’s EFC will be based on a single factor such as income or assets. The Department of Education does provide an online estimation tool called the FAFSA4caster to help families estimate their EFC.
Before you start thinking about telling a few white lies on your FAFSA to lower your expected family contribution, it’s important to realize that the penalties if caught can include stiff fines and jail time.
The easiest way to cut your expected family contribution is to be declared an independent student, though this requires meeting certain criteria. By removing a parent’s income and assets, it could substantially decrease the EFC and qualify you for more financial aid.

“Scott Largent is exactly the kind of leader we need fighting for us in the State Senate,” State Representative Chris Molendorp said. “I am proud to support Scott’s candidacy because of his commitment to the commonsense values we share.”
“I am honored by the overwhelming support I have received from area legislators since announcing my candidacy just two weeks ago,” Largent said. “We have already built a strong team of supporters that will help spread our commonsense message throughout the new six-county district.”
The legislators endorsing Largent are State Senator Mike Parson, R-Bolivar, State Senator David Pearce, R-Warrensburg, State Representative Wanda Brown, R-Cole Camp, State Representative Barney Fisher, R-Nevada, State Representative Sandy Crawford, R-Buffalo, State Representative Mike McGhee, R-Odessa, State Representative Rick Brattin, R-Harrisonville and State Representative Chris Molendorp, R-Belton. These legislators represent each of the six counties within the new district which includes Bates, Benton, Cass, Henry, Hickory, and St. Clair counties.
“Missouri needs leaders like Scott with real-world business experience to help get our economy back on track and our people back to work,” Senator Mike Parson said.
“Scott is the kind of pro-agriculture and pro-family leader that we need fighting for our Benton County values in Jefferson City,” added Representative Wanda Brown.
Largent, a local small business owner, lives in Clinton with his wife Leslie and their children, Seth, Taylor and Jesse. Leslie is a teacher in the Clinton school district.
