115th Old Settler's Day deemed "best yet"

Old Settlers Day was held on Wednesday, August 22nd at the Old Butler High School with 155 persons attending. Peggy Buhr from the Bates County Museum presented a very exciting program that outlined many events that occurred in Bates County over the past few years.

The oldest man attending was Lyle Howard who is 100 years young. The oldest man born in Bates County was Emmett Berry who will be 100 on September 29th. The oldest woman born in Bates County was Thelma Wheatley who is 96 years of age. The longest married couple was Pete and Marion Eikenbary who have been married 74 years.

Cash awards were given to 15 couples who have been married 50 years or over and cash was awarded to 39 people who are 85 years and over.

Door prizes from area supporters were given to every attendee. The lunch at the First Christian Church was a great success with many people either eating in or carrying out their meal.
