McGennis Youth Center BBQ schedule and info

The 42nd Annual McGennis Youth Center Barbecue is set for this Sunday (September 25). Activities get underway at 12:30 p.m. with a rededication program at the one-room school, children’s games and wagon rides.

In the one-room school, Rhonda Headley will take visitors back to an era with a little history, a spelling bee and contest at the blackboard. The classic country picnic games will be on the schedule for the younger set. Mumma Farms will be providing the wagon rides.

The meal of barbecued beef and pork, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, bread, iced tea and lemonade will be served at 1 p.m. with Flaming Lantern preparing the food. Everyone who wishes to lend a hand to the Center is invited to bring along a cake for the dessert table. Any extra cakes will be auctioned off.
Local singers Erica Diehl, Jara Mumma and Lori Fox will perform through the dinner hour.

About 2 p.m. a unique variety of crafts and collectible items will go on the auction block. Larry Hacker and Marvin Swickhamer will be handling the auctioneering duties. The craft auction has become known for its quality items, ranging from antiques to delicious baked goods.

A fun feature for this year’s auction will be the auctioning of ten McGennis Youth Center caps donated by Bell Photography. These caps will be numbered and the winning number drawn will win a Mossberg 12-gauge pump shotgun, donated by Bell Farms.

Items donated for the auction include two Adirondack chairs and table made by the boys and staff at the Rich Hill Youth Development Center, artwork, jewelry, coins and plants from Schlyer Designs, coins and a candle from Toppy Clark and a wooden shoeshine box and a decorative kitchen organizer/towel rack made by Jim Wheatley.

For more information about the auction or to donate an item, call Katie Bell-Abend at 417-395-2275 (days) or 417-395-4888 (evenings). The generosity of those who donate and those who bid has made the auction a major revenue source for the Youth Center.

Admission for the barbecue is $9 for adults and $2.50 for children (ages 6-12). Tickets are for the meal and are not required for the auction.

From Rich Hill, the McGennis Youth Center is located five miles west of A Highway and four miles south on WW Highway.

In case of rain, the Barbecue and Auction will be moved to the auditorium and cafeteria at the Rich Hill High School.
