Pic of the week
Our pic of the week comes from 2nd and Virginia streets in Adrian. A bush growing out of the attic vent of this abandoned house actually looks quite healthy...
Plain-speak on Proposition C
Bates County Live has been talking with local folks to get a feel of whether or not there is an understanding of how Proposition C works. For some, there has been understandable confusion; others quickly voiced their opinion; for those who are still unsure, here is how your vote will count:
A ‘yes’ vote will amend Missouri law to deny the government authority to penalize citizens for refusing to purchase private health insurance or infringe upon the right to offer or accept direct payment for lawful healthcare services. The amendment will also modify laws regarding the liquidation of certain domestic insurance companies.
A ‘no’ vote will not change the current Missouri law regarding private health insurance, lawful healthcare services and the liquidation of certain domestic insurance companies. If passed, this measure will have no impact on taxes, according of verbiage on the ballot.
A ‘no’ vote will not change the current Missouri law regarding private health insurance, lawful healthcare services and the liquidation of certain domestic insurance companies. If passed, this measure will have no impact on taxes, according of verbiage on the ballot.
In short, a YES vote will say no to government run health care in Missouri.
While Kansas City conservative radio talk show hosts urge voters to mark "Yes on C, screw D.C", as to keep Government run health care at bay, others feel there is a very strong need for some type of health care reform while national health care coverage may not be the best way, but its a start.
For those without health insurance, Government run health insurance may be the only answer.

Major improvements for Drexel water system coming
Deemed "much needed" water improvements are underway for the city of Drexel over the next year. Problems with the aged water plant have been cause for repeated boil orders or worse yet, no water available for residents over the years.
A contract to purchase water from Tri County Water Authority in Independence, Mo. shows improvements to include a new 10 inch water main to be laid between a point near Harrisonville to Drexel with a new booster pump station near 293rd and O Highway. Plans also include a new 250,000 gallon water tower to be constructed near State line, just northwest of town.
Within the city, there are plans to replace and upgrade the majority of water lines throughout town.
The entire project is slated for completion February 17, 2011 with a total cost projection of close to $4.5 million dollars. Nearly $2 million of the money comes from the American Recovery Act; you can learn more about the program by clicking here. Get info by putting Drexel's zip code 64742 in the search box.
Bates County Live will report progress as the project moves forward.
