Benefit for Sue Parks set for August 7th

Amsterdam resident Sue Parks, who at the age of 13 months was diagnosed with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis has underwent over 80 surgeries in her lifetime due to the illness. Despite past treatments, it has progressed to a point where she needs more in depth treatment, which is quite costly. A benefit for Sue has been planned for August 7 at the Miami school cafeteria. A three on three basketball tournament is scheduled at 3 pm; dinner at 5 pm with a silent auction running concurrent to the activities.

Anyone who would like to donate items for the auction may call Alanda Powell at 660-267-3596. Those interested in the basketball tournament may call Timmy Powell at 660-679-1158. Any help with the event would be greatly appreciated.

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a rare disease (there are perhaps 20,000 active cases in the U.S.) that is characterized by the growth of tumors in the respiratory tract caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Although they primarily occur in the larynx on and around the vocal cords, these growths may spread downward and affect the trachea, bronchi and occasionally the lungs. It is sometimes referred to as laryngeal papillomatosis and in the past was often called juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis, because it was thought to primarily affect only children. A distinguishing aspect of this disease is the tendency for the papilloma to recur after surgical procedures to remove them. Hence, the "recurrent" part of the name.
