Bates County Fair starts this weekend

This year's Bates County Fair officially kicks off July 11, runs through the 18th and carries the theme of 'Bates County Doing It Again in 2010'. Although there will be no carnival this year, there is a full slate including some new activities:

Sunday - 4-H Horse show and judging beginning at 9 a.m.

Monday - Parade - contestants must line up at the Fairgrounds at 5 p.m. for judging. Procession will leave and head towards the square at 5:30. Participants must check in for judging. There are prizes for animal drawn vehicles, antique vehicles, floats, horses, tractors, bicycles and four wheelers.

The Bates County Bash starts at 6 p.m. with plenty of food and entertainment.

At 6:30 Little Miss and Little Mr. Bates County will be crowned.

Talent show sponsored by Farm Bureau starts at 7:30-participants may call 660-679-3155 for info.

Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. : New events - Baseball and softball Home Run Derby at Comets field and the Girls Softball field. Age groups 8-13, 14-18, 19 and older. $1 entry fee.

Basketball free throw contest on the east side of the Youth Building.

Punt and pass contest-$1 entry fee

Hole-in-one contest with $20,000 winners purse. The contest runs four nights with 5 people qualifying each night. A temporary sand green has been placed at the fairgrounds with the final chapter taking place at the Butler Country Club on Saturday at hole #8. Entry free is $1.
