On 3/1/17 around 2:05pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Cass County along with the Cass County Sheriff's Deputies and Peculiar Police Department responded to two vehicle accident in the Southbound Lanes I-49 around Mile Marker 166 South of Peculiar.The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2008 Jeep driven by 24 year old Haley L. McDonald of Belton, Missouri overtook and struck the rear of the 2012 Ford driven by 27 year old Nathan R. Varner of Eagan, Minnesota causing both vehicle to travel off the right side of the roadway and overturned.
Haley L. McDonald was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and she was transported to the Jackson County Medical Examiner Office.
Two passengers in her vehicle 3 year old Liam J. Dennon and Carter W. Casey (Under the age of 1 year old) both were transported by ambulance to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for precaution.
Mr. Varner sustained moderate injuries in this accident and he was life flighted to Research Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri for treatment.
Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene by J's Southland Tow. This is Troop A of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's 10th Fatality of 2017.
