On June 22, a Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy was dispatched to investigate a report that trash had been dumped beside the road in the Southern part of the county and that a dog had been found under the trash.
When the officer arrived he was told that the dog had been found beside the trash. The report submitted to the prosecutor’s office states that the dog was found beside the trash. It also reported that the dog died soon after it was found.
Apparently, someone posted on social media that the dog had been found in a cooler in the pile of trash. Apparently, the story eventually changed to the dog had been locked into the cooler and the cooler had been thrown into the air repeatedly. No such facts are contained in the official investigation report.
Also found in the trash was a recently stolen debit card, which investigation revealed had been fraudulently used in Henry County.
The prosecutor has filed a class D felony of receiving stolen property related to the debit card and a class A misdemeanor of animal abuse related to the abandonment of the dog. The investigation report submitted did not specify the cause of the dog’s death. Animal abuse is only a felony under Missouri law if certain circumstances exist that were not present in this case.
The charges filed in this case are allegations and the suspect is considered innocent until proven guilty.
The office will not release the name of the person charged until he is arrested on a warrant.
