Butler downtown building faces demolition
The two-story brick structure located at 15 and 17 south Delaware street (directly west of the Bates County Sheriff's Office) is slated for demolition in the near future, leaving two Butler businesses to fend for themselves. Terry's Beauty Boutique and Cantrell's Sewing Machine & Vacuum Sales and Service, have been notified by the County Commission that they must vacate the premises by November 1st.
The 100 year old building is suffering from what appears to be severe deterioration; the Commission has expressed concern for the public's safety as part of the reasoning behind the demolition, as well as it will provide additional parking for the Sheriff's Office.

Drexel Fall Festival vendor registration now open
The City of Drexel in conjunction with the Log Cabin Quilters will host a Community Fall Festival and Quilt Show set for October 2, 2010 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. We were extremely pleased with the success of the event the last two years and hope to make this year even better. Last years event hosted over 60 booths with live entertainment throughout the day by bands, dancers, and singers. The craft booths were buzzing, kids were enjoying a variety of activities, the food vendors sold out of their items and the Quilt Club was able to raise over $2000.00 through the auctioning of quilts to donate to the Drexel Public School Foundation. It is our hope that this year will bring even more ven- dors, more spectators, and more FUN! There will be a variety of vendors, games for the kids, live entertainment, and much more! This year’s quilt auction, to be held at 12:30 by the Log Cabin Quilters. We hope we get the opportunity to see you there!

Arachnophobia!
At first glance, this spider found in Adrian was thought to be a young tarantula; but a little research indicated that tarantula's are only found in the extreme southern part of the state. This in fact is a wolf spider (arachnos scarious...!)
The eye arrangement of the wolf spider is one of its most interesting features; they have four small eyes in the bottom row, followed by two large eyes in the middle row, and two medium eyes in the top row.
They received the name wolf spider due to an early belief that the spiders would actually hunt their prey in a group. Some other names for the wolf spider are the ground spider and the hunting spider.
Wolf spiders do not actually make webs; instead they hunt for its meal. They are most commonly found throughout Australia but are dominant in other areas that have approximately the same climate. They make homes by digging holes or living under rocks. The wolf spider will often cover the burrow with leaves or grass.
During the beginning of fall, the wolf spider is quite often found in the home. The reason for this is that they are looking for a warm place to live throughout the course of the winter season. Even though the wolf spider will bite, its venom is not toxic to humans. This spider was released and was last seen headed to another home down the street.
