Former Bates County man indicted on Illegal Firearms and Explosives
Caleb Ayers |
Caleb M. Ayers, 29, of Garden City, was charged in a three-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City, Mo.
Today’s indictment alleges that Ayers, a convicted felon, was in possession of a firearm and explosives on May 14, 2016. Ayers allegedly possessed a Smith and Wesson .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun and two pipe bombs.
One of the pipe bombs is described in the indictment as an approximately 12-gram carbon dioxide cartridge filled with a quantity of explosive powder, with a functional green pyrotechnic fuse protruding from its opening and Zinc-coated steel balls (measuring approximately 0.174 inches in diameter) glued to the cartridge with yellow epoxy-type adhesive. The second pipe bomb is described in the indictment as a length of white PVC pipe, approximately 3/4 of inch in diameter, sealed with white PVC end caps attached at each end. The PVC pipe contained a quantity of explosive powder and there was lead shot of at least two sizes, No. 8 and No. 9, glued to the exterior of the pipe with a yellow adhesive.
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or explosives. Ayers has prior felony convictions for possessing methamphetamine and resisting arrest. Mr. Ayers is also charged with one count of possessing unregistered destructive devices.
Mr. Ayers was originally arrested when law enforcement officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Hawthorne Bank in Drexel, Mo. When officers arrived, Ayers was sleeping in the driver’s seat of a GMC utility truck, which was running. The loaded pistol was lying on top of the center console. After Ayers was awakened, an officer searched the vehicle and found the explosive devices in a plastic box in the rear seat.
Dickinson cautioned that the charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Trey Alford. It was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Cass County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department.

Obituary - Patrick “Pat” Donald Bowden
Patrick “Pat” Donald Bowden peacefully passed away January 30, 2017 in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 am Monday, February 6, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Butler, Missouri with Father Thomas Hermes officiating.
The Rosary will be recited at 9:00 am and visitation will follow until Mass begins at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to Serenity Hospice or VFW Post 1935. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at http://www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com
Pat was born August 23, 1933 in Hannibal, Missouri to Raymond and Elma Rader Bowden, where he was one of 10 children. In Kirksville, Missouri on May 28, 1960, he was united in marriage to Jane Thomas.
Pat entered the Marine Corp in 1953 where he received a USAFI Certificate and served overseas in the Korean War. He graduated from Northeast Missouri State University with a B.S. in Education. He taught in several school districts in Northeast Missouri (New Cambria, Knox County, Lewis County and Macon). Pat drove many school busses as well as an 18-wheeler truck for a portion of his life. Before retiring, he worked for Tan-Tara Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Survivors include his wife, Jane, one daughter, Jacqueline K. (Jackie) Coop and her husband, Jeff, of Peculiar, Missouri and one son, David Patrick Bowden and his wife, Raelene of Spring Hill, Kansas; four grandchildren: Ryan Coop, Lemoore, California, Austin Coop, Kansas City, Missouri, Haley Bowden and Libby Bowden both of Spring Hill, Kansas; and one step grandchild, Ramzy Harb and his wife, Susie, of Shawnee, Kansas. One sister, Marilyn Doty, of Hannibal, three great step grandchildren & many nieces and nephews survive.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Joseph, Anthony, William and Michael Bowden; and sisters, Madeline Monical, Margaret McGee, Alma Mae Jacobs and Barbara Hodgson.
Pat was a private pilot for many years and enjoyed hours of flying his own single engine plane. Also he helped to organize two flying clubs in Northeast Missouri and served as president of the Missouri Flying Farmers. Pat was a strong supporter of all athletics in the schools that he taught and was honored by the Macon Tiger Football Team in 1988. Among other things, Pat enjoyed country music, camping, hunting, and fishing. Probably one of his happiest moments in life was a tug on his fishing line, tramping through the woods hunting game, or when Mizzou won a game, as he was an avid Mizzou fan.
In October 2015, Pat was among the first Veterans to participate in the Flightless Honor Flight sponsored by the Honor Flight Network of Kansas City. On this day this special group of Veterans were honored for their service to our country.
He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Church of Butler and was a member at the VFW Post 1935 of Adrian. He and his wife owned & operated Vision Housing Rentals in Garden City for 12 years.

Nevada woman pleads guilty to exchanging food stamps for meth
Julie M. Drake |
Julie M. Drake, 48, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, according to a statement released by the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri.
According to the statement, Drake admitted that in 2015 she participated in a conspiracy in Bates and Vernon counties, accepting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, sometimes known as food stamps, in exchange for methamphetamine or a percentage of the benefits in cash.
She then used the electronic benefit transfer cards belonging to others and their personal identification numbers to buy her own food.
The Vernon County Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant Oct. 14, 2015, at Drake’s residence and seized a purse containing 22 bags of methamphetamine, weighing about 100 grams and packaged for distribution. They also found two digital scales, as well as a safe that contained $4,720.
Four electronic benefit transfer cards belonging to other people also were discovered in the house, according to the U.S. attorney's office. Investigators were able to establish Drake's use of the cards on video surveillance footage at Wal-Mart stores in Nevada and Lamar.
In interviews with federal agents, one of the recipients of the benefit cards admitted using his card to buy a quarter gram of methamphetamine from Drake. He told investigators that a $55.94 transaction was payment for the drug.
Another recipient admitted to selling his benefits to Drake for 50 cents per $1 in benefits. She would come to his residence to retrieve the card, call the 1-800 number on the back of the card to verify the balance and then give him half of its value in cash.
Drake is subject to a mandatory minimum sentence of five years or up to 40 years in federal prison without parole.
A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a pre-sentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office

Scam Alert In the area
Tax season is upon us and that means the IRS scams are back. If someone calls you and states they are from the IRS, do not give them any personal information. The IRS already has your personal information and they will not call you.
If they request that you pay what you owe with gift cards, this is a scam. The IRS does not accept gift cards. They may also tell you that you will have an arrest warrant if you do not pay them. This again is a scam. The El Dorado Springs Police Department has already taken reports from people being scammed.
Do not be a victim of a scam. If someone calls asking for gift card information for payment for taxes, don’t do it! Then, contact your local police department and advised them of the incident.
