Adrian Optimist Club April Students of the month

The Adrian Optimist Club is pleased to honor Students of the Month from the Miami, Ballard, and Adrian schools. Criteria for this honor center on outstanding academic and civic achievement and school spirit. Staff at each of the schools make the selection, and their decision is based on expansion of these criteria. Selection is based on the criteria, but a student stepping up to a particular task will come to play in it. Each student is honored with a certificate of recognition from the Adrian Optimist Club and $20.00 in Adrian Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks”.

The Miami Student of the Month is junior, Ron Brown, son of Ron Brown and Michelle Weaver. In school, Ron is active in basketball and FCCLA. He works at mowing, roofing, construction, and Family and Friend Foundation. Ron also serves his community as a Volunteer Fire Fighter. Ron states “I go to school for my dad. He pushes me to be the best that I can. He taught me not only to respect myself but everyone around me. He has told me to always help when I can and that’s what I will continue to do. Staff at Miami state “Ron is one of the first students to step up if he sees someone that needs help or a job that needs done. He is always fixing, building, or cleaning things in the building without being asked. He also really stepped up as stage manager for the play, doing many jobs that others didn’t and keeping the play running smoothly. He finds enjoyment in service to others.

The Ballard Student of the Month is junior, Andrew (Drew) Hon, son of Eric and Heather Hon. History teacher, Mr. Dunkin states “Drew is an all-around good sport. I have never heard him speak ill of others and he takes responsibility for his actions or lack of actions concerning class work.” Math teacher Mrs. Kershner states “Drew is a great class member. He is conscientious about completing his work and is always ready to join in discussions of how to solve a problem. He is naturally curious and willing to think through new ideas even if it’s not a part of the assigned work. Being willing to go beyond what is required is the recipe for success!” English teacher Mr. Smith states “The constant smile says it all. Pleasant and very much improved. Brings a refreshing sense of humor most days.” Drew is a member of the basketball, baseball, and Scholar Bowl teams. Drew is also involved in Drama Club, Art Club and Ballard Honor Society.

The Adrian Student of the Month for April is senior, Lauren Shipley, daughter of Shawn and Amy Shipley. At Adrian, Lauren is involved in volleyball, basketball, track & field, Student Council, National Honor Society, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also works summers at Willow Creek Group Home.

Lauren states “Give your best effort at everything you do because it will all go by in a blink.” Lauren plans to attend either Pitt State or Drury Universities to attain a degree to become a physical therapist.
