From the desk of Senator David Pearce - Creating jobs

Creating Jobs

At the beginning of the session, my colleagues and I decided that we would work on a few main goals, such as job creation and creating a balanced budget. These concepts are not just arbitrary ideals, but are necessary for a strong state and a bright future. The House approved its version of the budget this week and sent it to the Senate for consideration.

This week the Senate took up Senate Bill 280, a measure that would enhance job creation. The cornerstone of SB 280 is a new economic development plan called Compete Missouri. It would combine six existing business programs that would provide tax incentives for job creation and retention, as well as capital investment.

This program would allow the Department of Economic Development the discretion to allow a qualified company a number of tax exemptions, provided they create and retain jobs. For a company to achieve maximum benefit from this program, qualifications including offering health insurance, creation of at least 20 jobs within two years, or retention of at least 150 jobs already existing jobs and a commitment of $15 million in capital improvements would have to be met.

While the Compete Missouri Program would be a great step toward fulfilling Missouri’s potential in the economic race, so too is the opportunity to research, review, and discuss other tax credits on the books in Missouri, which is the other purpose of SB 280. The Tax Credit Review Commission was formed last summer in order to review 61 tax credit programs being offered by the state and examine their continued efficiency and effectiveness. One of the biggest questions that needs to be asked is whether or not the state is receiving a good return on its investment.

Creating jobs and balancing the budget are important goals for the Senate this session. Senate Bill 280 has the potential to allow discussion that will allow us to reach those goals and make Missouri a greater competitive force for the future.

As always, please feel free to contact me or my staff with any questions or concerns at any time. We look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions and trying to answer any questions you may have. You can reach us by phone at 866-277-0882 (toll-free) or 573-751-2272, or by fax at 573-526-7381.

Senator David Pearce serves Bates, Cass, Johnson and Vernon counties in the 31st State Senatorial District.

A little gift for the procrastinator in all of us...

If you wait until the last minute to file your taxes, you'll get three extra days this year as the official tax deadline has been moved to April 18th. That's because the District of Columbia will observe Emancipation Day on Friday the 15th, even though the official holiday isn't until the next day.

Since the Federal deadline will be the 18th, so will the Missouri and Kansas deadlines as well.

Look out for loose llama...

Bates County Live has received a report that a llama is running loose on 18 Highway, possibly in between Merwin to near CC highway. Use caution if traveling in the area.

State 4-H Horse Judging Contest – Columbia, MO March 19, 2011

4-H members enrolled in State Horse Judging Contest saw horses of every size and shape. Included were Ponies, (POA) Paints, Saddlebred and Draft. All in all, 9 classes were presented.

"4-H members have been practicing their horse judging skills in preparation for the contest but it's more than just a judging competition," according to Ben Gallup, State 4-H youth development specialist. Public speaking, critical thinking and decision making are all transferable skills gleaned from participation. "We call them life skills but honestly the kids are here because they love horses," he added.

This year about 180 registered for the contest. The top senior team is selected to represent Missouri 4-H at National Horse Judging in Louisville, KY in November. We also recognize our top ten 8 - 10 year old contestants and junior division participants.
Bates County 4-H’ers attending the contest: Back Row: Reba Colin, Daisy Miller, Taylor Fischer, and Cody Franklin (Coach) Front Row: Clint Cumpton, Kirstyn Eckhoff, Clay Cumpton, James Fischer

In the 8-10 year old division, James Fischer placed 3rd high individual, Clint Cumpton placed 6th high individual, and Kirstyn Eckhoff placed 8th high individual.
In the overall Junior Division, Taylor Fischer placed 4th high individual and Reba Colin placed 6th high individual.

The Bates County Junior Team consisting of Taylor Fischer, Reba Colin, James Fischer, Clint Cumpton, Kirsty Eckhoff, and Clay Cumpton placed 2nd.

Although Bates County did not have a Senior Team, Daisy Miller represented Bates County and placed 23rd as a first year Senior Division competitor.

Bingo jackpot climbs to $4,500

The progressive bingo jackpot went unclaimed last week......so this Monday night's pot will be $4,500. Play bingo every Monday night starting at 7 p.m. at the Adrian Optimist Building.

Temporary road and street closures...

Due to construction of the new bridge at the South 71 overpass in Butler, Business 71 Highway will be closed just South of Plunkett Bowl to include the ramp to US 71. Likewise, Rice Road will be closed at the South city limits as well.

Both roads will be closed until further notice.

Suspicious fires under investigation

Three recent fires in Adrian appear to be arson, according to Fire Chief Gary Dizney. On February 23rd, around 2:15 p.m., the fire department was dispatched to the scene of a shed on fire behind a residence on Seventh street. As firefighters were working the blaze, another call came in of a shed on fire some distance across town. Both buildings were a total loss and the cause of the fires was of suspicious nature.

Fast forward to March 22nd, just after 5:30 p.m. a 911 call reported smoke coming from the doors of the grain elevator building located on 5th street at the railroad tracks. That fire also was deliberately set.

In speaking to Chief Dizney, he stressed that the safety of Adrian citizens and their property is of utmost concern. "If anyone sees anything suspicious" he urged "please call the Adrian police department or 911 and report it immediately". In further conversation he reminded that those setting the fires could be subject to additional charges to arson, including trespassing, if caught.

Furthermore, if anyone has information regarding the fires call the Adrian Police Department at 816-297-2121 or the Bates County Sheriff's Department at 660-679-3232 or by dialing 911.

More local news video coming soon...

From the beginning, one of our goals at Bates County Live has been to serve the community with video coverage of big local events so folks who otherwise couldn't attend would have a chance to see what they missed. As we ramp up efforts to expand our video news, we have added a new page called 'BCtv' (Bates County TV) which can be found by clicking the BCtv button at the top of our home page.

While primarily the video coverage will include more public events such as 4th of July celebrations, parades, sports highlights and more, we have had a considerable number of people asking if we can do video coverage of city council and school board meetings as well. On that, the short answer is it depends. It depends on whether or not we can get permission to do so, plus there other other details to work out- in the meantime, we're working on it and will keep you updated.

At any rate, check the BCtv page regularly- as Spring events begin to happen, we'll be there to cover as much as possible.
