Wal-Mart purchase leads to meth bust

An undercover operation was quickly initiated last Thursday when Bates County Sheriff's Deputies and CNET Task Force Agents learned that two subjects had purchased items used to manufacture methamphetamine at Wal-Mart.

In short order, Deputies and agents converged on the suspect's vehicle at Nursery and Rice Road in South Butler. A search of the vehicle revealed numerous items commonly used to manufacture meth- lithium batteries, pseudo ephedrine, foil, starter fluid, coffee filters, mixing bowls and 4 glass jars.

The subjects Arnold L. Garrison II and Charles M. Stout both of Rich Hill, were arrested. During questioning, the pair revealed that they planned to steal anhydrous ammonia later Thursday night and begin cooking meth; they also revealed that they had stolen anhydrous ammonia on numerous occasions before from tanks in Butler.

Both Garrison and Stout have been charged with Distribution/Manufacturing or Attempt to or Possess with Intent to Manufacture a Controlled Substance i.e., methamphetamine. Bond was set at $40,000 cash only.

Sheriff Chad Anderson asks that if you observe people purchasing items or observe items that are consistent with cooking methamphetamine (such as the items listed below) please report that activity to the Sheriff’s Office at 660-679-3232. Some of the more common components to watch for are: Pyrex dishes or mason jars, pseudoephedrine, muriatic acid or bathroom drain cleaner, acetone, lithium batteries, tubing, starter fluid, coffee filters to just name a few.
