Bates County Industries (BCI) located just North of Butler continues to grow- as is evident of the addition of a newspaper recycling drop off recently added at Yoss Thriftway in Adrian. The company has traditionally been known as a plastics recycling center with the ability to process cardboard and aluminum cans as well. Currently 39 employees work at BCI and over the years has operated with the assistance of grants which aided in the purchase of two large balers need to package materials.
Just recently, BCI received a grant to add on to the 10,800 square foot building which is located just North of TT highway.
According to supervisor Pam Martin, there are some helpful guidelines when donating newspapers for recycling to BCI - it is not necessary to bundle papers but it's good if they are secured in some form. If bundled, about 15 papers secured with string is preferred. Bundles may be placed in cardboard boxes or paper grocery sacks for easy transporting.
BCI currently recycles cardboard, shrink wrap, #1 and #2 plastics, paper including books, magazines, office waste, and news paper, clothing and aluminum cans. In a year's time, BCI has recycled 382 tons of cardboard, 4.845 tons of shrink wrap, 8.978 tons of aluminum cans, 7.5015 tons of textiles, 258.934 tons of assorted paper, and 7.831 tons of plastics. In total, that's 670 tons of product kept out of the landfills.
