Obituary - Glenn Cummings

Cecil Glenn Cummings passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Bates County Memorial Hospital at the age of 86.
Glenn was the youngest child of Hiram and Gertie Cummings.  Four brothers and two sisters, as well as one grandson and one great-grandson preceded him in death.
Glenn married Ruby McQuinn on June 23, 1943 in Nevada, Mo.  They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in June of this year.  A small celebration was held with some family and lots of hospital employees; one employee asked him to dance.
Glenn served in the U.S. Navy in the signal corps. He participated in many dangerous missions and was elated that he graduated from the signal corps school, because so many did not. It should be noted that Glenn served both the Eastern and Western fronts of World War II.  After his service, Glenn and Ruby returned to the farm life that he had known and loved.  After farming a few years they moved into Butler, where Glenn became an insurance agent for the Farm Bureau.  Because his first love was being involved in farming, he began delivering lime and fertilizer throughout Bates County, and continued this to within a year of his death.  Glenn loved the land, his customers, and his truck.
To sum up Glenn’s life there is one sentence that says it all:  “Love of God, family, farm and country!” Glenn was a very quiet person and you had to push to get a lot of conversation.  His wit was very uncanny and he always had pet names for special people he cared about.  He was a member of the First Christian Church of Butler, as well as the Butler American Legion.  He also belonged to a very special Pitch group, which he enjoyed attending weekly.
Glenn is survived by his wife Ruby of Butler; daughter Cheryl and husband Bill Gepford of Marco Island, Fla.; daughter Carol Cummings of Butler; grandchildren Brett (Gina) Lord; Stacy (Doug) Fields; Shannon (Misti) Gepford; Karmin (Scott) Ricker; Cherilyn (Aaron) Widhalm; great-grandchildren Sara, Ryan, Kylie, Kassity, Alyxandra, Madalyn, Ryenne, Taylor, Hailee, Trey, and Abygail.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660) 679-0009, with Shannon Gepford presiding. No visitation.  Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.  Memorial contributions in memory of Glenn are suggested to Happy Hill Church of God, or Bates County Home Health, in care of the funeral home.  Written messages and memories may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.
