Jackson County, MO Sheriff’s Office Warns Against Scam

In recent weeks, the Jackson County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office has been contacted by individuals inquiring if they had criminal charges for failing to appear for jury duty.

When investigating the circumstances, investigators learned the victims were contacted by a male caller identifying himself as a lieutenant with the Jackson County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office.  The caller advised the victims they failed to appear for jury duty resulting in a warrant for their arrest.  The caller then directs the victims to respond to a local convenience store and purchase a “Green Dot Money Pack” in the amount of their bond and notify the caller upon the card’s purchase.  After ultimately being given security numbers on the cards, the caller has gained access to the funds posted on the cards.

The Jackson County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone it does not solicit any funds over the phone.  In addition, all business relating to payment of fees is conducted and collected in person.

Should anyone receive a similar call, do not follow the caller’s directions, and call the Investigations Division at 816-524-4302. Should you have any questions, contact me at 816-881-3882 or rmontgomery@jacksongov.org.
