Lizzie Jennings, daughter of Kyle Jennings and Nina Jennings, and Makayla Fuqua, granddaughter of Shirley Fritts, participated in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Legislative Shadowing Project on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014.  Vickie Popplewell is the Rich Hill R-4 FCCLA chapter advisor and accompanied the students to Jefferson City.  Sponsored by the Missouri Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), the program provides an opportunity for junior and senior high school students to spend a day with their state representative, senator or other public official at the State Capitol.  The students observe hearings, meetings and other public duties.

The Legislative Shadowing Project, now in its 14^th year, is conducted by Missouri FCCLA, the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) for family consumer sciences education.  A dinner banquet, sponsored by The Missouri Bar, was held for participants on Tuesday, Feb. 18.  Tours of the Governor’s Mansion, State Capitol and Supreme Court Building also were provided.

Ms. Fuqua, 2013-2014 MO State FCCLA vice-president of STAR Events competition, spent the day with Representative Randy Pike.  Lizzie Jennings, RHHS Senior FCCLA member, shadowed Senator Ed Emery.  Both FCCLA members enjoyed their time at the Missouri capitol and left with a better understanding of the Missouri legislative system.

FCCLA is a nonprofit student organization for young women and men, grades 6-12, in family consumer sciences education.  Missouri FCCLA has more than 11,500 members in nearly 350 local chapters, making it the fifth-largest FCCLA state association in the nation.
